Simple translation (based on vAdhi kEsari azhagiya maNavALa jIyar‘s 12000 padi)
Saying “lord’s physical beauty is apt”, having my heart broken, I will remain anguished everyday, whenever I see the groups of gathered clouds; oh distinguished charioteer who entered the armies and rode the best chariot to uproot the hundred persons by being the servitor for the five pANdavas who were having honesty! You are not coming ; does this match your conduct?

Highlights from nampiLLai‘s vyAkyAnam as documented by vadakkuth thiruvIdhip piLLai
- okkum ammAn uruvam enRu – While knowing well “sarvESvara is distinct from all other entities”, AzhwArs would consider clouds which are made of smoke, light, water and air as said in mEga sandhESam 1.5 “dhUma jyOthi salilam maruthAm sannipAdha: kva mEga:“, to be similar to emperumAn.
- uLLam kuzhaindhu – This is not just extenal, the heart itself is broken.
- nAL nALum – This broken state is not occassional, but occurring continuously without break.
- thokka mEgap pal kuzhAngaL – AzhwAr will not become broken when he sees part of the clouds; but will become broken everytime he sees groups of gathered clouds.
- nAL nALum tholaivan – I am neither dead, nor able to survive.
- nAn – The sight of the clouds will bring peace for the townspeople. [But for me, it brings anguish]
- thakka aivar – For which sight of clouds, did the pANdavas become weak, to be protected by emperumAn? The five pANdavas who have the honesty and goodness to say “our clan should survive, please give five villages, that is sufficient for us”.
- thamakkAy – To be a servitor for arjuna to order krishNa saying as in SrI bhagavath gIthA 1.21 “ratham sthApaya” (Position the chariot).
- anRu – The day when they remained isolated.
- Iraimpadhinmar – To uproot the hundred brothers who said “we will not survive along with the relatives [namely pANdavas]”.
- pukka – to enter into the battle field.
- nal thEr – The chariot which became greatly celebrated due to having emperumAn as the sArathy (charioteer).
- thanip pAgA – Oh one who handled it on your own! They did not see the rathy (arjuna who is seated in the chariot); they are only seeing the sArathy who carefully engaged arjuna who said in SrI bhagavath gIthA 1.32 “na kAnkshE vijayam krishNa” (Oh krishNa! I don’t desire victory).
- vArAy – Could you who positioned the chariot amidst the two armies when arjuna said as in SrI bhagavath gIthA 1.21 ” sEnayOrubhayOr madhyE ratham sthApaya mE’chyutha” (Oh achyutha! position my chariot in between the line ups of both armies), not conduct your chariot amidst the clouds? Would you only help if there are five persons suffering and hundred persons tormenting them? Would you not help if I am alone and tormented by countless groups of clouds?
- idhuvO poruththam – Is this how you aptly mingled with devotees previously? Were your acts, such as going as a messenger, being a charioteer, vowing to not take up arms and breaking that vow and changing day into night, all false? AzhwAr is saying that vyAsa who said “nArAyaNa kathAm imAm” (I am going to recite the stories of nArAyaNa) accepted some remuneration and sang about emperumAn. AzhwAr is saying “unless emperumAn helps me, all these are not true”.
- vArAy – Should I suffer all of these? Can you not show your face?
In the next article we will enjoy the next pAsuram.
