Simple translation (based on vAdhi kEsari azhagiya maNavALa jIyar‘s 12000 padi)
emperumAn is the chief of thiurvEnkata hill which is having gardens with abundance of beauty and having the goodness of revealing bhagavAn’s saulabhyam (simplicity) etc; nammAzhwAr, the chief of the attractive AzhwArthirunagari which is having beautiful forts, mercifully spoke about such emperumAn in this decad among the beautifully arranged thousand pAsurams; those who can recite these well will enjoy the enjoyment of nithyasUris who are bound by the divine will of bhagavAn. kattezhil also implies completely beautiful/orderly in all the four lines.

Highlights from nampiLLai‘s vyAkyAnam as documented by vadakkuth thiruvIdhip piLLai
- kattezhil … – kadi is changed to kattu implying fragrant, beautiful garden.
- nal vEngadam – thirumalA which is apt for both SEsha (servitor) and SEshi (lord).
- vANanai – Chief, controller. AzhwAr praised thiruvEngadamudaiyAn only. He himself said in thiruvAimozhi 3.9.1 “en nAvil in kavi yAn oruvarkkum kodukkilEn” (The songs from my tongue will not be submitted to anyone other than SrInivAsa).
- kattezhil then kurugUr – kattu – araN – fort. Fortified AzhwArthirunagari.
- kattezhil Ayiram – kattu – thodai – poetic rule. Having poetic beauty.
- kattezhil vAnavar – (The great) nithyasUris who are fully in the mode of goodness. “kattezhil” can also be an attribute for bhOgam (enjoyment). In the samsAram (material realm), due to being bound by karma, all enjoyment will be both insignificant and temporary. In paramapadham, since they match the nature of AthmA and bhagavAn, they will be abundant and eternal.
In all the four lines, kattu could mean “completeness”. thirumalA which is the ultimate abode for his simplicity, is the place for surrendering unto him; paramapadham which is the ultimate abode for his supremacy, is the place for enjoyment; thiruvEngadam is said as in thiruvAimozhi 9.3.8 “onRiyAkkai pugAmai uyyak koLvAn ninRa thiruvEngadam” (thirumalA is the abode of emperumAn who does not let us get a materialistic birth and will uplift us).
In the next article we will enjoy the next decad.
