Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
ilangu muththum pavaLak kozhundhum ezhil thAmarai pulangaL muRRum pozhil sUzhndhu azhagAya pullANi mEl – The beauty of this abode made AzhwAr to sing in this manner. AzhwAr has composed these songs on thiruppullANi, which is surrounded by orchards which are having shining pearls, beautiful tender coral sprouts, and the ponds which are filled with freshly blossomed lotus flowers.
kalangal illAp pugazhAn – This is the nature of the poet. It is better to engage in pursuits based on self-efforts which are filled with ahankAra (Ego) than roaming around harming others. Eliminating that too, AzhwAr said that we should get the result by bhagavAn’s grace only. And then, he eliminated that too just as he eliminated the previous aspects, and he manifested the sorrow due to the urge in attaining the goal. This is the fame he has acquired. Only when the fame reaches this stage that there is no bewilderment in that.
kaliyan oli mAlai – As said in SrI rAmAyaNam bAla kANdam “raghuvara charitham muni praNItham” (History of SrI rAghava (SrI rAma) spoken by the sage vAlmIkI bhagavAn), these are the words of a trustworthy person.
valam koL thoNdar … – They can learn these ten pAsurams; or they can learn just one pAsuram. Or they may meditate upon the meanings of that pAsuram. Or they may enjoy the musical tune in that. Of if someone sings this pAsuram, not being intolerable for that. Somehow one should have some engagement; the abode for them – the nithya vibhUthi (paramapadham) which is free from the scent of sorrow. While a person enjoys it here, having become free from the loneliness here, going there in the archirAdhi path to be praised by those who are there, the person will enter the nithya vibhUthi and will eternally get to enjoy bhagavAn.
In the next article we will enjoy the next pAsuram.
