Simple Translation
thirukkOttiyUr is surrounded by cool waters and fertile fields. emperumAn, who is the causative entity for all, has mercifully taken residence in this place. periyAzhwAr, who is without any flaw, who is the benefactor of SrI vaishNavas, and who is the controller of SrI villibuththUr, which possesses the coolness to drive away the heat of samsAram, has mercifully composed these pAsurams, where he has praised those, who carry out servitude to emperumAn and has reviled those, who do not involve in such servitude and who go after worldly pursuits. Those, who are able to recite these pAsurams, without any flaw, will get to carry out servitude to hrishIkESan.
vyAkhyAnam
sIdha nIr … – thirukkOttiyUr is surrounded by water bodies, which are unfathomable, and which are always cool, not being affected by hot breeze; it is also surrounded by fertile fields. The place has abundance of water and green fields with fresh crops, wherever one sees.
AdhiyAn adiyAraiyum adimai inRith thirivAraiyum – During the time of deluge, chith entities [those, with the ability to think] were lying together with achith entities [those, without the ability to think] without any distinction. With a compassionate divine mind, emperumAn provided the chith entities with forms and senses, in order to attain him, as mentioned in SrI vishNu thathvam 6 “vichithrAdhEha sampaththi: ISvarAya nivEdhithum pUrvamEva kruthA brahman hastha pAdhAdhi samyuthA” (Oh, brAhmaNa! During the time of creation, in order to worship and attain him, emperumAn has given a physical form to jIvAthmA, along with hands, feet etc). emperumAn, apart from providing physical form and senses, came nearby jIvAthmAs and mercifully resided in thirukkOttiyUr such that these people could approach him easily. Those, who carry out servitude to such emperumAn, and those, who, instead of carrying out servitude to him, indulge in other worldly pursuits, with those forms and senses, as mentioned in the first pAsuram of this decad, periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 4.4.1 “mudhalvanaich chindhiyAdha appAvakArigaL” (those, who have committed sins such that they do not meditate on emperumAn, the causative entity). Instead of knowing the benefit that he has given, due to their sinful deeds, these people, without involvement in carrying out servitude at his divine feet, engage their three faculties [of mind, speech and action] in other pursuits.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that emperumAn resides mercifully in thirukkOttiyUr as chokka nArAyaNan, being the causative entity. AzhwAr mentions the greatness of those, who carry out servitude to that chokka nArAyaNan, as well as the misfortunes of those who, instead of carrying out servitude to emperumAn, slip from their position of being bhagavath SEsha bhUthar [servitor to emperumAn] and get into ruinous position.
kOdhil … – periyAzhwAr does not have the flaw of being unqualified to praise or revile the two types of people, above. He is a benefactor for those who follow vEdhams. He is the controller of SrI villibuththUr, which negates all the heat of samsAram, with its coolness. These ten pAsurams, which have been mercifully composed by such periyAzhwAr …
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that for AzhwAr, engaging in any activity other than mangaLASAsanam is a flaw. Thus, he engages only with mangaLASAsanam, considering that alone as the essence; he is the benefactor for the eminent brAhmaNas; he is the controller of SrI villibuththUr, which does not have the heat emanating from sOhambhAvam [considering oneself as ISvaran], but which has the coolness coming from the thought of dhAsOham [adiyEn is emperumAn’s servitor]. Those, who are capable of reciting these pAsurams, who consider that anything, which has not been considered as worthy by periyAzhwAr is evil …
Edham inRi uraippavar – those who recite without any fault. In other words, reciting the pAsurams, knowing the divine mind of AzhwAr, and without any fault in that.
irudIkEsanukku ALarE – they will get to carry out servitude to one, who controls our senses such that they do not wander in other pursuits and is capable of engaging his followers in servitude
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that chokka nArAyaNan, emperumAn at thirukkOttiyUr, controls the senses of his followers through his vow, through his auspicious qualities such as compassion, through the beauty of his divine form, through his power to control his followers, who are his limbs and through impelling us incidentally. Those, who recite these pAsurams, will get to carryout servitude to chokka nArAyaNan, starting with knowledge, devotion and detachment, and ending with mangaLASAsanam.
We shall next consider the pravEsam of the next thirumozhi.
