Simple Translation

SrI janaka, the king, had fame filled in all the directions. For the yAgam, which he conducted, SrI rAma had gone along with sage viSvAmithra. There, he broke the bow, which had been kept as the wager, for marrying sIthAp pirAtti, in the middle of the huge assembly. pirAtti saw the divine ring on his hand. Looking at that divine ring, now given by hanuman, pirAtti, who has locks decorated with flowers, told him “Oh, hanuman! The identifications which you mentioned earlier and the divine ring which you now gave are congruent”. Saying this, she kept the divine ring on top of her head and became very happy in her divine mind.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

dhikku … – Due to his knowledge of thathvam [truth], detachment from worldly matters, carrying out deeds ordained, without any expectation of the result, as a mumukshu [one who is desirous of attaining mOksham, SrI vaikuNtam], king janaka had fame spread in all the directions. For the yAgam [vEdhic ritual] which he conducted through AvahanIyAgni etc [there are three rituals which are to be conducted viz. AvahanIyAgni, dhAkshnAgni and gArhapathyAgni], Sri rAma had mercifully gone along with sage viSvAmithra. During that time …

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that the term “dhikku niRaindha pugazhALan” could be construed for viSvAmithra. The universe, which is fifty crore yOjana [one yOjana is approximately 10 miles] long, is inhabited by the controller of the universe et al. A sage [vasishta] cursed a king [thriSanku] to become a chaNdALan [person of lowly conduct]. Another sage [viSvAmithra] conducted a yAgam with that chaNdALan and made him ascend to svarga [heaven] with his physical form. When the lord of svarga pushed him down towards earth, the sage stopped him midway, through the strength of his penance. He had risen from the level of a rAjarishi to the level of brahmarishi and did not go back to his regal ways. His fame of penance had spread throughout the world. His penance was such powerful that he could convert the curse of a sage [vasishta] who had transformed a king to a chandALan like this. Thus, if penances arise out of a reason [to achieve a goal], anything could be carried out. Alternatively, the term dhikku niRai pugazhALan could refer to perumAL. His fame had spread throughout the worlds. When viSvAmithra took perumAL with him to help him in conducting yAgams, he told dhaSaratha that he knew about perumAL, that he was a mahAthmA [an eminent entity], sathya parAkrama [valorous forever] etc. He also said that great entities such as vasishta et al knew these truths. thI vELvi … – During the time when perumAL went behind viSvAmithra to protect his yAgams …

mikka perum savai naduvE – In the middle of the huge assembly which had gathered there.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that in the assembly of brAhmaNas and kings, when SrI rAma broke the bow [which was kept as a wager] and held the divine hand of pirAtti, she saw the form of that divine ring on his divine finger, through her divine eyes and felt the divine ring on her hand.

vil iRuththAn mOdhiram kaNdu – SrI rAma had broken a bow, which was kept as a wager in the competition, for marrying sIthAp pirAtti. During that time, pirAtti had seen the divine ring on his divine finger. Later, when he held her hand, she felt the divine ring and subsequently, she had been seeing that divine ring, all the time. Looking at that divine ring, now given by hanuman …

okkum … – Oh, hanuman! The incidents which you narrated earlier, as identifications, and the identification of this divine ring are congruent. Just as it has been mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 36.4 “gruhIthvA prEkshamANA sA bharthu: kara vibhUshaNam l bharthAram iva samprApthA jAnakImudhithAbhavath ” (That sIthA, taking the divine ring of her consort, which had adorned his divine hand, looked at it and became happy as if she had attained her husband), she took that divine ring, and manifesting the reverence for that divine ring and her desire, she kept it on her head. Then, she held it in her hand, looking at it intently. She thought of the divine finger, associated with that divine ring, the divine hand associated with that divine finger, then the divine shoulder and through that, the divine form of SrI rAma. Thinking of all these, through the maturing nature of her thoughts, she thought of perumAL donning her divine locks with flowers, with both of them sitting on one mattress and became happy. AzhwAr is amazed at her happiness.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that pirAtti’s divine form was similar to the form which all the fragrances on earth could have had unitedly. pirAtti could be termed as fragrance; such was the effect. The conjunction um [as in the last word, sIthaiyumE] indicates that both perumAL and pirAtti became happy, at that time.

We shall next consider the last pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
