pravESam

In line with the duties of his clan, yaSOdhAp pirAtti had allowed krishNa to go behind calves for grazing. As soon as he left, she felt sad, being unable to tolerate separation from him. She recounted his playful activities in the village and said “Instead of roaming around, indulging in these activities, why did I allow him to go [to the forest]?” She thought about his tender nature as well as the cruel nature of the path through which he had to go behind the calves; feeling sad, she lamented “I sent such a tender boy to go behind calves to the forest”. AzhwAr, taking over her pathos, spoke in a similar fashion about krishNa and experienced those emotions, in the earlier thirumozhi (decad of divine verses), 3.2. When krishNa returned in the evening behind the calves, yaSOdhAp pirAtti went towards him, felt happy looking at his divine form and decorations, called others nearby and shared her joy with them. She says words such as “There is none in the world who has given birth to a child, like me” [1st pAsuram of this decad], “I was enjoying my time and allowed you to go behind calves, grazing them; there is none who is as hard-hearted like me” [2nd pAsuram], “See, your divine form is full of dirt from the calves; I have kept ready all the materials for your bath. Have your bath and come for having food” [3rd pAsuram], “Since I did not provide you with an umbrella and sandals [when you went grazing the calves], your divine feet have become warm, losing their freshness, your divine eyes have become red and your divine form has become tired” [4th pAsuram]. Further she says several other narratives about him, up to the ninth pAsuram where she says “Oh, krishNa! From tomorrow, you do not have to go behind calves; decorate yourself well and remain here itself”. AzhwAr, taking over her pathos, imbibing her words where she tells krishNa as to what he should do and what he should avoid, speaks about krishNa with her pathos, due to his overflowing affection for krishNa and enjoys that flavour, in this decad.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that in the earlier thirumozhi, krishNa had gone behind calves, in order to enjoy playful activities. Instead of waiting patiently, thinking “The one who has gone will return on his own; this is part of his duty”, yaSOdhAp pirAtti thought “It is because we did not nurture him protectively and properly that he had to go behind calves which do not behave in line with his thinking”. Thinking about the dangers which were waiting for him inside the forest, yaSOdhAp pirAtti felt sad, unable to tolerate the momentary separation from krishNa. periyAzhwAr too, taking over her pathos, engaged with similar emptions and spoke about those, in the earlier thirumozhi. Now, ensuring that all those sorrows do not come again, seeing krishNa come behind the calves, becoming extremely happy, AzhwAr thinks of her joy in sharing her emotions with others and becomes happy, recounting them in his words, in this thirumozhi.
