Simple Translation

Without giving umbrella and sandals, which will protect him from sunlight above and from the heat etc on land, under the feet, I had sent dhAmOdharan to the forest, where pebbles split due to the heat from sun and their sharpness hurt the soles of feet. I, the hard-hearted person, sent him behind calves, to such forest. How sad! What sin have I committed? (says she, in disgust)

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

kudaiyum seruppum kodAdhE – without giving umbrella, which protects from sunlight, and sandals, which protect from heat from earth, thorns etc.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that yaSOdhAp pirAtti sends krishNa usually with umbrella, which protects from rain, wind and heat, and sandals, which protect from thorns, hot sand, hot dust and hot pebbles. She offers these to the entity who is served by AdhiSEshan, as mentioned in mudhal thiruvandhAdhi 53senRAl kudaiyAm…ninRAl maravadiyAm” (AdhiSEshan serves as the umbrella for emperumAn wherever he goes and as sandals, whenever he stands). But, today, she did not send him with those protective materials.

dhAmOdharanai nAn – He was obedient to me, not untying himself free from the binding which I made with a mortar, using a rope. Such a son …

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti calls him as dhAmodhAran since he is obedient and simplicity personified for her when she ties him with a rope or beats him. One who is at the centre of paramapadham and who does not move a bit, is seen here as simplicity personified.

udaiyum kadiyana UnRu vem paraRgaL udai – pebbles which are broken due to excessive heat, and which are sharp, piercing the foot when placed over them, and hot enough such that foot could not be placed over them.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the pebbles break under the intense heat from sun, retaining their sharpness even when they break. Even if one were to carefully step aside from them and step onto the land, it would be similar to stepping over a heated metal plate. There would be no means for overcoming the heat inside the forest, which has lost its water resources. Alternatively, the term udai could be read with “kudaiyum seruppum”. This would then convey the meaning that yaSOdhAp pirAtti had sent krishNa without umbrella, sandals and the dress specifically worn by the herd-people.

kadiya vem kAn idai – in the forest which does not have any shade, where one could take cover, due to the cruel heat

kAladi nOva – such that the soles of the divine feet hurt

kanRin pin kodiyEn en piLLaiyaip pOKkinEn – I, who did not take these into account, and who am cruel, sent my son, who is most tender, behind calves, which will go hopping wherever they see green grass for grazing.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that calves do not know the place where they should go to and return from. They will hop from one place to another, in search of green pastures. krishNa would know about how their feet will hurt, but will not look after his divine feet, which are tender, as mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 9.2.10pidikkum melladi” (tender, divine feet, which are gently massaged by periya pirAtti and bhUmip pirAtti) and as in thirunedundhANdagam 1thaLir puraiyum thiruvadi” (the divine feet which become fresh). He further says that yaSOdhAp pirAtti says that compared to her cruel nature, the forest could be termed as “That forest has water and shade”. It appears that she sees him after removing his eminence, his greatness, his good behaviour and the affection on account of being her son [since she is sending him to the forest, with a cruel heart].

ellE pAvamE – In a dejected manner, she says “What cruel sin have I committed?”
