Simple Translation
Saying “I do not desire the bosom and other eatables which you are offering”, you plucked out the ear ornaments and threw them away. When indhran, due to his anger of having been denied food, forced rain to wreak havoc, you lifted the gOvardhana hill like an umbrella and protected the cow-herd folks and the cows from the hailstorm, becoming joyous, without showing any sign of ennui. Oh, one who enabled the cow-herd folks to graze the herds of cows! Oh, one who broke the unique rudhra’s bow which was kept as a wager for winning sIthAp pirAtti during her marriage! Oh, one who measured the worlds by lengthening your divine feet! Oh, one who is the lord of the people in SrI gOkulam! Is it not my mistake that I had not pierced the holes in your ears even at the stage when you were young with your head not being stable?
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
mulai … – even as yaSOdhAp pirAtti praised krishNa, asking him to consume milk [as seen in the previous pAsuram], krishNa started consuming milk. When she tried to adorn his ears with ear rings, he became furious.
muiai Edhum vENdEn enRu – saying “I do not want your bosom or the other eatables such as appam, vadai etc”
Odi – slipping out of my hand and running such that I would not be able to catch you. When I ran behind you, to make me feel terrible
nin kAdhil kadippaip paRiththu eRindhu ittu – plucking out the ear rings which I had adorned on your ears and throwing them down, in front of me. During that time, indhran, out of his anger of having been denied food, started a hailstorm to punish the herd-people. In order to ensure that they were not harmed …
malai eduththu – lifting the gOvardhana hill itself, which krishNa had earlier referred to as the protector, as an umbrella.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that krishNa, while running away from yaSOdhAp pirAtti after throwing down his ear-rings, said “Am I not the protector? Would I remain silently when those who are to be protected suffer?”
magizhndhu – without showing any sign of tiredness due to lifting the mountain, feeling happy that “We have been able to protect those who were to be protected”
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that krishNa lifted the gOvardhana hill, feeling happy “We got hold of a good mountain”. He further quotes an incident which happened during the time of bhattar [son of kUraththAzhwAn and one of our preceptors]. bhattar would say that krishNa lifted a stone [mountain] since it was raining stones [hailstorm]. Had it been raining water, he would, perhaps, have lifted the ocean itself.
kal mAri kAththu – protecting them such that not a drop of water fell either on any of the cow-herd people or on any of the cows
pasu nirai mEyththAy – just as it has been mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 7-4-10 “ina Anirai pAdi angE odunga” (such that the herds of cows and cow-herd people in SrI gOkulam took shelter), oh, one who made the cow-herd people to graze their cows by making the mountain cover all the areas where the cows would graze!
silai onRu iRuththAy – the unique bow, belonging to rudhra, was kept as the wager for marrying sIthAp pirAtti. Oh, one who snapped that bow, which could not be moved or lifted by anyone!
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that this [breaking the bow] could refer to mathurA [when kamsan had invited krishNa to the ritual of bows, with the intention of killing him] or it could refer to mithilA [where SrI rAma snapped the bow]
thirivikkiramA – Oh, one who measured all the worlds in order to redeem the land lost by indhra, just like those who walk along the boundaries of their land, to proclaim possession!
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that emperumAn, as thrivikrama, removed the anyaSEshathvam [being servitor to deities other than emperumAn] and svasvAthanthryam [being dependent on oneself and not on emperumAn] when he kept his divine feet on all the people in samsAram.
thiru AyarpAdip pirAnE – Oh, one is the benefactor in all manner for the people who live in SrI gOkulam! Thinking “Just like you fulfil the desires of everyone by being their benefactor, you should fulfil my desire too”, when yaSOdhAp pirAtti attempted to put back the ear rings, which he had thrown earlier, he refused to listen to her.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that AzhwAr calls krishNa as thiruvAyarpAdip pirAn since he acted as their benefactor by protecting them from the hailstorm.
thalai nilA … – yaSOdhAp pirAtti says “I should have done this when you were still young, with your head still not being stable enough; it was my mistake. There is no sense in finding fault with you”, blaming herself for this.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that she blames herself for not piercing his ears before he put his head up and started arguing with her for everything.
