pravESam (Introduction)

In the earlier thirumozhi, yaSOdhAp pirAtti had enjoyed the divine activities of krishNa when he played with dirt in the courtyard, called chandhran etc. She told chandhran about various reasons for which he should come and told him, on many occasions “If you are desirous to play with him, come soon”. AzhwAr spoke the same words to chandhran, and enjoyed krishNa’s divine activities, at the same moment that yaSOdhAp pirAtti had enjoyed these, though AzhwAr came much later. Now, appropriate to krishNa’s age now, desiring that he should carry out sengIrai [sengIrai is an activity indulged in by infants, who have just started to crawl, when they sway from side to side, even as they are on their hands and knees on the floor], yaSOdhAp pirAtti praises krishNa in many ways and tells him “enakku oru kAl sengIrai Ada vENum” [you should carry out sengIrai for me, once]. Just as yaSOdhAp pirAtti had enjoyed this activity during her time, AzhwAr too enjoys it at the same time that she did, with her words and remains happy.

Requesting him several times to carry out sengIrai, by praising him om many occasions and enjoying his activity are the features where AzhwAr matches yaSOdhAp pirAtti. Since he has been granted knowledge with devotion, without any trace of doubt, by emperumAn, all his [krishNa’s] divine activities shine brightly for him. Enjoying various divine activities of krishNa in his other incarnations, due to dharmi aikyam [whether it is narasimha or SrI rAma or krishNa incarnation, they are all from the same root, SrIman nArAyaNa], enjoying the divine activities of krishNa in his later years, enjoying his divine activities in his other forms such as para, vyUha et al [SrIman nArAyaNa’s form in SrI vaikuNtam or in milky ocean] as well as enjoying his divine qualities which he exhibits in various dhivya dhESams (divine abodes) due to his overflowing affection for krishNa, AzhwAr makes those activities as distinctions for krishNa and through these the enjoyment which he attains is special for him [which yaSOdhAp pirAtti would not have known].

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says in his pravESam for this decad, the following: in the earlier thirumozhis [divine verses], leelA vibhUthi was such that some entities such as brahmA et al were not invited [yet they sent their gifts through their followers, as we had seen in the third thirumozhi], some came personally and offered their gifts [again, in the third thirumozhi], some did not come even after krishNa called out [we had seen this in the previous thirumozhi, when chandhran, despite being called many times, did not come]. Those who are in the other vibhUthi [nithya vibhUthi] came with the gifts sent by pirAttimArs (SrI mahAlakshmi, SrI bhUdhEvi et al], when AzhwAr called out to them, since they are mahAmathi – possessing great wisdom. Those who are in thrithIyA vibhUthi [here, this refers to thiruvAyppAdi, SrI gOkulam], also came, just as we had seen in the second thirumozhi, when they were called out through verses such as “pavaLa vAyIr vandhu kANIr”. krishNa is a unique entity since he is dependent on his followers [he listened to the words and deeds of yaSOdhAp pirAtti]. Starting with “uyya ulagu” [this] padhigam [decad] and ending with “mechchUdhu”  [2.1 padhigam], yaSOdhAp pirAtti’s words through which AzhwAr enjoys are all his mangaLASAsanam [praising and wishing well for emperumAn]. Among the various dances which children indulge in, there is one type called as sengIrai. This is mentioned in thamizhar’s [those who speak the thamizh language] literature. The term kIr refers to a type of song and its colour [quality] is red [manifesting affection]. Thus, AzhwAr requests krishNa to dance appropriate for his pAsurams [hymns].

We shall next consider the 1st pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
