pravESam (Introduction)
In the 7th decad, AzhwAr expressed his loss of not having enjoyed emperumAn since time immemorial, through the pAsurams of dhEvaki, who, despite giving birth to kaNNan, could not enjoy his activities as an infant and child, beginning with Alai nIL karumbu. In the next decad (8th) beginning with mannupugazh kausalai than he took on the pathos of SrI kausalyA and enjoyed singing lullabies for Sri rAma through her. In the next decad of van thALiin Niai, he expressed his loss through the lament of dhaSaratha chakravarthi who had enjoyed the infantile and childish activities of SrI rAma but who lost, once SrI rAma became a youth [since he had to go to the forest]. AzhwAr felt that while he had the necessary relationship with emperumAn [as an AthmA], he could not enjoy emperumAn and expressed that loss by taking on the pathos of dhaSaratha. In this final, 10th decad, he gets rid of all the sorrows that he had undergone in the earlier decads by composing pAsurams on emperumAn who has taken archA rUpam (idol form) and who lives permanently in thillai thiruchchithra kUtam [a divine abode in present day chidhambaram], describing the activities during the incarnation of SrI rAma from the time of his birth to the time when he returned to SrI vaikuNtam, just like it had been described during the days of his incarnation by SrI vAlmeeki bhagavAn in his SrI rAmAyaNam.
