Simple Translation

krishNa, along with a thousand children who were like him, returned, with different types of peacock umbrellas present everywhere, with musical instruments such as different types of drums, instruments with single  strings, flutes, and singing songs apt for their clan. Looking at this crowd, young girls said joyfully “Is it an assembly of clouds coming on land?” They went near windows, holding on to them, looking at krishNa. They were entering, going head-over heels, standing, out of fear of elders et al, losing out their hearts to the way in which krishNa was going. They even forgot to eat their food.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

thazhai … – thazhai, thongal are different types pf umbrellas made with peacock feathers. dhivAkaran lexicon classifies these umbrellas as thazhai, thongal, sApAlam, pichcham, kuLiri. Though all these are types of peacock umbrellas, since there are differences in their forms, they are called as thazhai, thongal etc. Since the verse says thazhaigaL in the plural number, it is evident that thongal too are many.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that thazhai refers to umbrella, thongal refers to umbrella made of peacock feathers.

thadhumbi engum – filled up everywhere.

thaNNumai – a distinguished type of auspicious musical instrument. ekkam – instrument with a single string. maththaLi – another type of drum. Alternatively, ekkammaththaLi could be considered as a single instrument, referring to a type of drum.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that thaNNUmai is a small drum tied to the waist and played. ekkam refers to a drum with the skin on only one side. maththaLi refers to a drum which makes loud noise.

thAzh peeli – a type of wind instrument [like a trumpet], decorated with peacock feathers. The peacock feathers could be either on top or below the instrument.

kuzhalgaLum – different types of flute, made with leaf or bamboo.

gIdhamum – singing songs, apt for the herd-clan

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that apart from singing, they were also dancing. Alternatively, thazhai would refer to tender leaves supported with sticks. Also, decorated with peacock feathers. thongal – garland atop umbrella. Garland made of leaves.

Agi engum – wherever one looked, only these could be seen.

gOvindhan varuginRa kUttam kaNdu – krishNa has coronated himself as protector of cattle. Looking at the crowd of krishNa coming along with a thousand children, who are just like him.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that gOvindhan refers to one who protects cattle; it also refers to one who has cattle. One who is capable of stealing the eyes and hearts of beholders, instead of letting the senses to go after worldly pursuits.

mazhai koLo varuginRadhu enRu solli mangamAr – young girls, joyously ask “Is it an assembly of clouds walking on land?”

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the girls were saying joyously “How amazing is this!”

sAlaga vAsal paRRi – approaching windows

nuzhaivanar niRpanar Agi – due to infatuation with krishNa, they are hitting against one another. Due to hurdles such as the window, or fear of elder relatives in the room or their own pride of being a woman, they stand, without going further.

engum uLLam vittu – losing their hearts behind the path in which krishNa went

UN maRandhu ozhindhanar – They forgot their food. Don’t they need their hearts to think of food? However, their hearts have followed krishNa. How could those, without hearts, think of food? Hence, instead of saying maRandhanar [forgot], the verse says maRandhu ozhindhanar [they have completely forgotten about the entity called as food].

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here – Could they recall that they have eaten in the past, if they do not have their hearts? For those who have eaten now, is it possible to eat? [looking at kaNNan itself is equivalent to eating. Thus, once they have looked at him, is it possible to eat again?] ozhindhanarE – they have changed to such an extent that it would appear that forever hereafter, they will not expect to eat.

We shall next consider the 2nd pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
