Simple Translation
krishNa, after applying turmeric, which will stick well on his divine form, would go to the girls who are in thiruvAyppAdi. When they build houses with sand, disregarding him, he would destroy them by kicking with his divine feet. Instead of roaming around, carrying out mischiefs like this, why did I send my son, krishNa, behind calves, to the forest, which is pervaded by dust coming from the movement of calves and where hunters roam? How sad! What sin have I committed?
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
paRRu manjaL pUsi– When the girls in thiruvAyppAdi grind turmeric for applying on themselves, they would test the efficacy of turmeric sticking to the body, on krishNa’s divine form. Since each girl will test on separate regions on his form, his entire form would appear as if it had been smeared completely with turmeric. Alluding to this, yaSOdhAp pirAtti says in the pAsuram paRRu manjaL pUsi.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says the following: All the girls in thiruvAyppAdi will grind turmeric. krishNa would go to all those places. They will invite him, saying “Oh, krishNa, come”. krishNa would think “In a place where everyone says ‘krishNa is a mischievous imp’ we have been fortunate to be called by them”. He will go near them. Since they grind turmeric, with effort, such that it would last a few baths, they will say “If we test on our bodies, since turmeric trace will not stick, even after taking bath, it would not be sticking to the places where we have applied”. Hence, they will test the efficacy of turmeric on krishNa’s divine form. Since one girl will not test her turmeric on the same portion of krishNa’s form where another girl had tested, his divine form would appear with turmeric everywhere. krishNa will feel happy thinking “We have been fortunate that they have applied turmeric on our form with their hands and we have been given a bath by them to test the efficacy of turmeric sticking on our form”. When they go together for taking a bath, he would tell them “Let me also come along with you people. I will also have a bath along with you all. Take me also with you”. They will tell one another “He is a mischievous person; he should not come with us”. People in the village say “Look, krishNa is here. Take care, girls” Thus, fearing fault-finding by the village people, they will leave him behind when going for a bath. Due to the dejection of not being taken by them when they went for bathing, krishNa will think “Small girls will be playing, building small houses with sand. Let me also go to them and play with them”. When he goes to them, they will say “He is a mischievous boy who will kick sand in our eyes and destroy our houses” and will not allow him in their play. Since they did not allow him to take part, krishNa will destroy their little houses of sand and roam around. yaSOdhAp pirAtti feels dejected that apart from not seeing such mischievous activities of krishNa, she had sent him behind calves which kick up a sand storm while going into the forest, where hunters would be hiding under the sand storm, to waylay the people coming behind the calves and rob them of their belongings.
pAvaimArodu pAdiyil– along with girls in thiruvAyppAdi.
siRRil sidhaiththu – destroying small houses made with sand by girls, disregarding him.
engum thImai seydhu thiriyAmE – instead of roaming around everywhere, carrying out mischiefs like these. It appears that yaSOdhAp pirAtti will be happy, seeing such activities carried out by krishNa.
kaRRuth thULi udai vEdar kAnidai – when the calves run into the forest region, looking for appropriate places to graze, the dust kicked up by them would spread everywhere, making it difficult to see anyone coming from the opposite direction. Hunters would roam around in the forest, utilising this feature and steal materials from people coming behind the calves.
kanRin piN eRRukku en piLLaiyaip pOkkinEn – Calves will not allow those coming behind them to look in any direction, other than themselves. For what purpose did I send my son behind these calves?
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti is asking herself in anguish, “What did I gain by sending him to the forest? What did the calves gain? What did krishNa gain? What did his father or the people in the village gain? Isn’t there anyone apart from krishNa to go behind the calves for grazing? Had I seen him when he left, I could have controlled him and prevented him from going. I was not fortunate to have done like that. Alas! It is all due to my sin”.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says in the end “We have seen the divine daughter of AzhwAr [ANdAL nAchchiyAr] applying turmeric on mannAr [rangamannAr, divine name of deity present in SrI villibuththUr] and giving him a divine bath”. The reason for not saying “sARRith thirumanjanam seyya” in the pAsuram [after the first line paRRu manjaL pUsi], is because these words could be uttered only by confidential servitor [ANdAL] [and not by the girls in thiruvAyppAdi]. AzhwAr too, when the situation demands, will be in the assembly of ANdAL nAchchiyAr.
ellE pAvamE – In a dejected manner, she says “What cruel sin have I committed?”
We shall next consider the 3rd pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
