Simple Translation
krishNa consumed curd, which was kept for churning, and milk, which was kept for heating, by herd-women in the village. When he tried to steal butter once again, he was caught by the herd-women, whose shoulders were rounded, like bamboo. We will perish today on account of the one, who was caught like that, and tied down in their houses. We will perish today, on account of the one who was beaten up by them and who cried.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
Achchiyar chEri – in the village of the herd-women
aLai thayir pAl uNdu – they had kept churning staff inside curd, for churning it [to take butter from it]. They had also kept milk, in containers, for heating it. krishNa would consume all these. Alternatively, the term aLai thayir would also refer to curd in which, due to excessive desire, krishNa had put his hand and started churning it.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that krishNa would go to every street in that village, and enter every house, whether it had a gate or not, consuming food in all those houses. He would be wondering “Will they find me?” and keep going and coming. He would only keep seeing whether people are there but would not check whether his stomach is full or not.
pErththu avar kaNdu pidikkap pidi uNdu – When he tried to enter their houses once again, in order to steal butter, they caught him, by hiding themselves initially.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that due to repeatedly walking into their houses, the sounds of his footsteps as well as of the spherical balls from his waist cord falling down would be heard. Once the herd-women find out his presence, he would think “Even if we run, they would be able to find out from the sound of the spherical balls”. Instead of catching hold of the waist cord or closing their ears, he would close his ears and stand. When they catch him, he would remain caught, in their hands.
vEy … – being unable to steal butter from the houses of those herd-women, whose shoulders were fresh, rounded and long, like bamboo.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the herd-women would have kept the butter, high, close to the height of their shoulders. Unable to reach that height and not being satisfied with the curd and milk consumed already, krishNa would look for a way to reach that butter. Even while being caught by them, due to his fondness for eating butter and looking for ways to get to that butter, he would remain without any movement. That would enable them to tie him down to a mortar.
angu … – we will perish today, on account of the one who was tied down by them.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that krishNa would be thinking that he could devise ways to reach that butter, when being tied down to the mortar since none will disturb him.
adi uNdu … – apart from being tied down, when they beat him [for consuming their curd and milk], he would start crying. We will perish on account of such krishNa. Through this, they say that we will perish due to that krishNa, who was obedient towards his favourable people such that they could tie him down, but was not obedient towards us and was acting in a difficult manner.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that when the herd-women take a stick, he would start crying even if they say that they would not beat him with it. He would behave just the same way as he would, in his house [when caught by yaSOdhAp pirAtti].
