Glories of maNakkAl nambi
The given name of maNakkAl nambi is dhASarathi. SrI rAma miSrar is a special name for this AchArya. He is also known as maNakkAl nambi as he was born in a village named maNakkAl, close to SrIrangam. The word nambi denotes that the person is complete with auspicious, noble qualities. thirukkuRungudi emperumAn is also known as nambi. madhurakavi AzhwAr also addressed nammAzhwAr as thirukkurugUr nambi. An AchArya by name selva nambi lived during the time of periyAzhwAr and served as a minister in the pANdiya kingdom. Thus, we can understand that emperumAn, AzhwAr and AchAryas were addressed as nambi. Along these lines, SrI rAma miSrar is also addressed as maNakkAl nambi. It was this AchArya who reformed and brought SrIman nAthamunigaL’s grandson SrI yAmunAchAryar, also known as ALavandhAr, to the SrIvaishNava sampradhAyam and that is one of maNakkAl nambi’s greatness. yAmunAchAryar was a great scholar from a very young age. Later, he got immersed in royal pleasures, maNakkAl nambi, out of great compassion, took the responsibility of reforming ALavandhAr by explaining the essence of SrI bhagavath gIthA. maNakkAl nambi had great devotion towards his AchArya, SrI uyyakkoNdAr.

dhEsamuyyak koNdavar thAL senni vaippOn vAzhiyE – uyyakkoNdAr uplifted this entire world through his contributions. maNakkAl nambi surrendered to the lotus feet of such great uyyakkoNdAr and held AchArya’s feet onto his head. May such maNakkAl nambi live long! Let us look at a special anecdote from their history. maNakkAl nambi performed various kainkaryams (service) to his AchArya with great devotion. One of which is to take his AchArya’s daughters to the riverbanks and escort them back safely after their routines, just like how an elder brother would do! One such time, the path was muddy due to the rains, and the girls hesitated to walk on the mud. maNakkAl nambi lay down across the mud so that the girls could put their feet on his back and walk across without stepping on the mud. When his AchArya learnt about this, he got upset. maNakkAl nambi humbly pacified him saying that he performed this kainkaryam to his AchArya with great love and devotion. This made uyyakkoNdAr very happy and he placed his divine feet on his disciple’s head. maNakkAl nambi prayed to his AchArya that he be blessed with eternal service opportunities. thennarangar seeraruLaich chErndhiruppOn vAzhiyE – maNakkAl nambi who has received the grace and protection of SrIranganAthap perumAL who resides in beautiful SrIrangam that is located in the south. May such maNakkAl nambi live long. maNakkAl nambi belongs to the guru paramparA lineage that starts with periya perumAL. Hence, he is always under periya perumAL’s grace.
dhAsarathi thirunAmam thazhaikka vandhOn vAzhiyE – dhASarathi means the son of dhaSaratha and refers to SrI rAma. maNakkAl nambi’s parents named him as dhASarathi. He lived a devoted life and added greatness to this name. May such maNakkAl nambi, live long.

nEsamudan Ariyanai niyamiththAn vAzhiyE – maNakkAl nambi trained, reformed and made ALavandhAr into a great AchArya. He did so with lot of love and patience. May such maNakkAl nambi live long! maNakkAl nambi reached out to ALavandhAr and found intelligent ways to get close to him as ALavandhAr was immersed in pleasures of the kingdom. maNakkAl nambi also prayed to periya perumAL to accept ALavandhAr and grace him, thereby doing a great favour to his disciple. maNakkAl nambi lured the materialistic ALavandhAr by saying that he had ALavandhAr’s grandfather’s ancestral wealth and took him to SrIrangam and showed him that periya perumAL is the biggest wealth. Thus, ALavandhAr was trained and transformed into a great AchArya by maNakkAl nambi. May he live long!
nIL nilaththil padhinmar kalai niRuththinAn vAzhiyE – SrIman nAthamunigaL retrieved the 4000 dhivya prabandham by the grace of nammAzhwAr. uyyakkoNdAr learnt it from his AchArya nAthamunigaL and spread it wide. maNakkAl nambi learnt the dhivya prabandham from uyyakkoNdAr and passed it on to ALavandhAr. Thus, he made sure that the great teachings of AzhwArs continued to thrive for times to come. May such maNakkAl nambi live long!
mAsi magam thanil viLanga vandhudhiththAn vAzhiyE – maNakkAl nambi was born in the star magam, in the month of mAsi (Feb-Mar). He lived such a noble and devoted life that the star and month of his birth is glorified due to his birth. May such AchArya live long!
