Glories of ANdAL
SrI ANdAL is celebrated as kOdhai nAchchiyAr. She appeared as periyAzhwAr’s daughter in SrIvillipuththUr. She is the incarnation of bhUmip pirAtti. She is naturally affectionate towards emperumAn. She holds the position of being emperumAn’s wife. The birth star of ANdAL, thiruvAdippUram, is well-known. The two prabandhams composed by ANdAL are thiruppAvai and nAchchiyAr thirumozhi. ANdAL nAchchiyAr was immersed in krishNAvathAram. She appeared on this earth for the upliftment of all the AthmAs and brought welfare to us. She gifted us thiruppAvai through which she showed the way for our upliftment by singing the divine names of emperumAn. maNavALa mAmunigaL hails in his upadhEsa raththinamAlai as “pinjAyp pazhuththALai, ANdALai nALum vazhuththAy manamE! magizhndhu”. He further celebrates her as “inRO thiruvAdip pUram emakkAga anRO ingu ANdAL avadhariththAL vaikundha vAn bOgam thannai igazhndhu AzhwAr thirumagaLarAy”. pinjAyp pazhuththALai refers that she composed thiruppAvai at the tender age of 5 years. She had deep devotion towards emperumAn. She wore the garland that periyAzhwAr made for emperumAn and then offered it to him and hence came to be known as “sUdik koduththa sudarkkodi”.

thiruvAdip pUraththil segaththudhiththAL vAzhiyE – May the one who appeared on this earth on the auspicious day of Adi month, pUram star live long!
thiruppAvai muppadhum seppinAL vAzhiyE – She composed a prabandham called thiruppAvai which consists of 30 pAsurams (poems). These pAsurams are to be definitely learnt by everyone born as a human. It is hailed that those who haven’t heard of thiruppAvai are considered to be a burden for the earth. May ANdAL nAchchiyAr, who gave us such glorious thiruppAvai, live long!
periyAzhwAr peRReduththa peNpiLLai vAzhiyE – May ANdAL nAchchiyAr who appeared as periyAzhwAr’s daughter live long!
perumpUdhUr mAmunikkup pinnAnAL vAzhiyE – emperumAnAr SrI rAmAnujar is hailed as SrIperumbudhUr mAmunivar ( a great saint of SrIperumbudhUr). SrI ANdAL is hailed as his younger sister due to an interesting incident. ANdAL nAchchiyAr desired to submit 100 thadA (vessel) of butter and another 100 thadA of sweet pongaL known as akkAra adisil to SrI kaLLazhagar emperumAn in thirumAlirunjOlai in her “nARu naRumpozhil” pAsuram of nAchchiyAr thirumozhi. When emperumAnAr went to perform mangaLASasanam to thirumAlirunjOlai azhagar emperumAn, he remembered ANdAL nAchchiyAr’s desire and fulfiled her promise by offering butter and sweet pongaL in 100 vessels. After this, he reached SrIvilliputhUr to perform mangaLASasanams to vatabhadhrasAyi, rangamannAr and SrI ANdAL. During that time, SrI ANdAL, contrary to the nature of archA form, she addressed emperumAnAr as “vArum kOyil aNNarE!” (“Welcome dear brother from kOyil!”). kOyil here refers to SrIrangam. She bestowed the title of “elder brother” on emperumAnAr since he fulfiled her desire just like how an elder brother would do for his younger sister. May ANdAL, who considered herself as younger sister to perumbudhUr mAmuni (emperumAnAr) live long!
oru nURRu nARpaththu mUnRuraiththAL vAzhiyE – ANdAL nAchchiyAr composed a collection of 143 pAsurams (poems) known as nAchchiyAr thirumozhi. She beautifully expressed her desolation in being separated from emprumAn and disappointment that emperumAn didn’t accept her even after expressing her desire to surrender to emperumAn through her thiruppAvai pAsurams. May ANdAL, who gave us the 143 pAsurams of nAchchiyAr thirumozhi, live long!
uyar arangarkkE kaNNi ugandhaLiththAL vAzhiyE – She offered the beautiful flower garlands, after wearing them, out of great devotion for periya perumAL SrI ranganAthar. She wore the garland first before offering it to SrI ranganAthar. She lovingly adorned the garland as she realised that emperumAn eagerly accepted the garland worn by her. May such ANdAL nAchchiyAr live long!
maruvArum thirumalli vaLanAdi vAzhiyE – The regions surrounding SrIvilliputhur are referred to as “thirumalli vaLanAdu”, just like how the regions surrounding AzhwAr thirunagari were used to be known as “thiruvazhudhi vaLanAdu”. May ANdAL nAchchiyAr, who belongs to such fragrant land of thirumalli vaLanAdu, live long!vaNpudhuvai nagark kOdhai malarp padhangaL vAzhiyE – May the divine lotus-like feet of ANdAL nAchchiyAr, who is bestowed with good generosity and who belongs to the town of SrIvilliputhUr, live long!
Thus concludes the vAzhi thirunAmam of ANdAL nAchiyAr.
