Simple Translation

Kings such as narakAsuran et al, who were residing in a place, prAgjyOthishapuram, had thought of destroying indra et al, who had no shortcoming in them, having taken refuge under krishNa. However, krishNa uprooted such kings in the time that it takes to close and open the eyes. Oh, crow! Comb the divine locks of such krishNa, as a decoration. Comb the distinguished locks of that krishNa, who grazes cows.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

kizhakkil kudi mannar – monster kings such as narakAsuran et al, who were residing in prAgjyOthishapuram

kEdilAdhArai – those who thought that they did not have any shortcoming since they had strengths of boons and their shoulders

azhippAn ninaindhittu – emperumAn decided in his divine mind that he would destroy them since they were harming indhra et al, who had taken refuge under him.

avvAzhi adhanAl – divine disc of emperumAn is such that it would go to the place, on its own, thought of by emperumAn [he doesn’t even have to tell it to go]. Just as it has been mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 2.10.5aRamuyal Azhi” (the divine disc which is engaged in the righteous act of protecting emperumAn’s followers), the divine disc would engage with protecting the followers of emperumAn more than emperumAn himself. With that divine disc …

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that the term adhanAl refers to the divine disc which will not return to emperumAn’s divine hands until the mission for which emperumAn had set off the divine disc is completed, even if emperumAn wishes to recall him.

vizhikkum aLavilE vEr aRuththAnai – one who uprooted them even before one could wink [close the eyes and open them]. Alternatively, the verse could be rearranged as “kEdilAdhArai azhippAn ninaindhittu – kizhakkil kudi mannar – vizhikkum aLavilE, Azhi adhanAl – vEr aRuththAnai”. In this case, the meaning would be as follows: indhra et al were thinking that ISvaran is there as our protector; hence, we do not have any shortcoming. The kings such as narakAsuran et al, living in prAgjyOthishapuram, thought that they would destroy indhra et al. Once indhra conveyed this information to krishNa, he mounted his vehicle, garuda, went to narakapuram, and with the divine disc, which goes to the place which he thinks of, he cut them down such that they could not come up again at all.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the term vizhikkum aLavilE refers to emperumAn thinking that this is the time to destroy [the unfavourable entities such as narakAsuran et al, who reside in prAgjyOthishapuram], after deciding that they have to be destroyed. kEdilAmai [being without any shortcoming] refers to indhra et al, getting engaged in brahma bhAvanai [matters related to emperumAn] and dissociating from karma bhAvanai [matters related to carrying out deeds]. Thus, thinking of those entities who were thinking of harming such indhra et al as well as the women related to them.

kuzhaRkaNiyAkak kuzhal vArAy – such that the divine locks shine with beauty

gOvindhan – one who has intense engagement in protecting cows

thaN kuzhal – divine locks, which are excellent
