Simple Translation

This little child, kaNNan, had earlier consumed milk from pUthanA’s bosom. He had snapped a dishonest monster who had pervaded a wheel as well as twin arjuna trees. Oh, crow! Come and comb well, the dark, divine locks of one who has the complexion of a dark purple water-lily. Oh crow, comb the divine locks of one, who has the divine complexion of a faultless, dark bluish gemstone.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

pEyin mulai uNda piLLai ivan munnam – earlier, the demon pUthanA had come, taking the form of yaSOdhAp pirAtti [ to offer her poisoned milk to krishNa]. However, thinking that she was his mother yaSOdhAp pirAtti, krishNa consumed her milk. He was such an innocent child. If there is no shortcoming in his childishness, how did she perish? His nature is such that if anyone approaches him with an unfavourable mind, that person will perish.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that AzhwAr is warning us not to suffer like pUthanA who had seen a fault in krishNa’s auspicious qualities and came with the intention of killing him. He further says that there is no boundary to his childishness.

mAyach chagadum marudhum iRuththavan – subsequent to that, while he was reclining, a monster had pervaded in a dishonest manner, a wheel which was near krishNa. [Due to delay in arrival of milk] krishNa kicked his feet. The wheel got caught between his kicking feet and got snapped. When krishNa was crawling, there were twin arjuna trees in his path, intending to harm him. krishNa pushed the trees with his divine thighs, snapping them too.

kAyA malar vaNNan – his divine beauty is such that his qualities of AthmA become superfluous. With his beautiful, just then blossomed, purple water-lily like form, he would make the favourable entities to give in writing that they are his servitors.

kaNNan – even if his form had not been beautiful, his easy-to-approach nature was such that none could go away from him.

karum kuzhal – since AzhwAr is unable to give an equivalent for the divine locks, he merely calls the locks as dark.

thUydhAga vandhu kuzhal vArAy – come and comb his divine locks well. Combing the divine locks well is to separate the locks, while combing.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that there is no fault in krishNa’s divine locks. It is only we who, in our ignorance, have thought that he was responsible for our ills and transposed that as a fault on him.

thUmaNi vaNNan – one, who has the complexion of a faultless bluish gemstone. The dark purple water-lily flower may not appear the same way, all the time. However, the bluish gemstone would have the same colour always. Thus, he has the divine complexion of such a bluish gemstone.

We shall next consider the 3rd pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
