avathArikai (Introduction)

Simple Translation

dhuryOdhana, who is the first among the hundred brothers, thought that he alone should rule the entire earth, instead of sharing the abundantly available huge wealth with pANdavas. My swAmy, who was resplendent as the charioteer, and who made sure that dhuryOdhana was obliterated with his entire clan, will embrace my back. krishNa, who is the leader of the herd folk, will come and embrace my back.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

kaththa … – fighting for the huge wealth, because of ego and possessive nature, saying that this is for me and this is for you. kadhippu – having fat layers. Alternatively, just like saying “thakkaththadiththu” and “pakkapparuththu” the verse “kaththakkadhiththu” could be taken as a single word, referring to a huge opulence.

oththu … – unable to live together with the pANdavas, who are close relatives, since their [dhuryOdhana and his brothers] hearts were not accepting any agreement with the pANdavas.

maNNALvAn – expecting anxiously to rule over the entire world, himself [dhuryOdhana]

koththuth thalaivan … – dhuryOdhana, who is the first and who is the controller of the assembly of brothers starting with dhuSSAsana.

kudi keda … – to be annihilated with the entire clan

thOnRiya – just as rAmAnujar had said in the avathArikai [introduction] of SrI gIthA bhAshyam “pArtham rathim AthmAnam cha sArathim sarva lOkam sAkshikam chakAra” (krishNa made sure that the entire world saw that arjuna was the head of the chariot and that he was the commander of that chariot), he was the lord who shone as the charioteer for pArtha [arjuna]. That lord will come and embrace my back.

AyargaL … – The one, who is the head of herd-folk, will embrace my back.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that krishNa had the pride of being the controller of the herd-folk by being under their control.

We shall next consider the 4th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
