Word-by-Word Meanings

puttiyil – in the divine waist

Simple Translation

krishNa applied mud and dirt on his divine waist, embraced yaSOdhAp pirAtti such that she felt the mud and dirt on her. He then entered the house without anyone knowing and consumed curd and butter, saved and kept in pots. Oh, one who roams around like a calf which eats food unknown to the farmer! You should clap your hands. Oh, one who has the divine lotus [with brahmA on it] which created the worlds! You should clap.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

putti … – bringing mud and dirt on his waist. Since there is water on some parts of his divine form just as it has been mentioned in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 1-9-1 “chottuchchottu ennath thuLikkath thuLikka” (with droplets of water from inside the body coming out and dripping), when he rolls on dirt, that which sticks to that part of his divine form which has water, becomes mud and that which sticks to that part of his divine form, which does not have water, becomes dry dirt.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that in order to make it real when he incarnates in various species, his activities in such species will correspond to those species. Thus, fluid from inside the body coming out is in line with that. The fluid could be sweat or other fluid coming out from inside the divine form.

atti amukki – since he comes in with his divine form like this and hugs yaSOdhAp pirAtti firmly, the mud and dirt transfer on to her such that she feels them well.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that if she had prevented him from applying the mud and dirt on her, he would have got furious. Hence, she allows him to do that, with a smile.

agam pukku … – running inside the house, without me, who had kept them, knowing about it, eating curd and butter kept in pots.

patti … – oh, one who roams around like a calf which steals and eats, making it appear that stealing is your full-time work! You should clap.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that a farmer would have kept hay etc, outside the fence, safely. The calf would go there, without the farmer knowing about it and eat that hay. In a similar fashion, krishNa enters the house without yaSOdhAp pirAtti knowing about it and eats curd and butter, kept there by her. Hence, AzhwAr calls him as pattikkanRE.

paRpanAbhA – Oh, one who has the divine lotus [with brahmA on it] which is the reason for the creation of all the worlds, in your divine navel!
