Birthplace of periyAzhwAr is SrIvillipuththUr. He established parathvam (the superiority of SrIman nArAyaNa). In the king’s royal court in madhurai, periyAzhwAr proves emperumAn SrIman nArAyaNa’s ultimate supremacy by quoting various verses from the vEdhas. periyAzhwAr’s birth star is swAthi in the thamizh month Ani. His works include thiruppallAndu and periyAzhwAr thirumozhi. He was always very much immersed in the incarnation of krishNa. In periyAzhwAr thirumozhi, he has sung many pAsurams on krishNa in the mood of mother yaSOdhA. He has demonstrated to us the importance of doing mangaLAsAsanams (auspicious felicitations) to bhagavAn. He showered his blessings with motherly love and affection on seeing emperumAn. A key difference between periyAzhwAr and other AzhwArs is that when other AzhwArs see emperumAn, they request Him to relieve them from samsAram because it is so difficult for them to be in the samsArAm. Whereas periyAzhwAr on seeing emperumAn, became worried that emperumAn came to this dangerous samsAram and poured his felicitations on Him as a protection for Him. Even though periyAzhwAr established emperumAn’s parathvam, when He came in person, periyAzhwAr could only think about the tenderness & youthfulness of emperumAn, His soft qualities, His delicate beauty which cannot be perceived by our eyes and was very worried that He might be harmed by dangers in this world and started blessing Him like a mother, to be protected and to be safe.

Explanation of periyAzhwar vAzhi thirunAmam
nalla thiruppallAndu nAnmUnROn vAzhiyE
nalla – distinguished, thiruppallAndu – thiruppallAndu pAsurams, nAnmUnROn – one who gave 4 (nAn) x 3 (mUnRu), vAzhiyE – long live
periyAzhwar gave us the 12 distinguished pAsurams called thiruppallAndu, on emperumAn. This thiruppallAndu shows how periyAzhwar gathered everyone to shower mangaLAsAsanams for perumAL. manavALa mAmunigaL has glorified thiruppallAndu in his “upadhEsa raththina mAlai” as “vEdhaththukku Om ennum adhu pOl uLLadhukkellAm surukkAy” which means that praNavam is the essence of all vEdhas, similarly thiruppallAndu is the essence of all dhivyaprabhandhams. Further, just like how mAmunigaL also said “uNdO thiruppallAndukku oppadhOr kalai dhAn” (there is no work that is comparable to thiruppallAndu), all sevAkAlam goshtis (group of SrivaishNava sitting together and chanting dhivya prabandhams) start and end with thiruppallAndu even today. Such is the glory of thiruppallANdu and long live periyAzhwar who gave us this composition.
nAnURRu aRupaththonRum namakkuraiththAn vAzhiyE
nAnURRu – 400, aRupaththondrum – 61, namakkuraiththAn – namakku + uraiththAn -> namakku – for us, uraiththAn – one who spoke, vAzhiyE – long live
Another prabandham that was given to us by periyAzhwar is “periyAzhwAr thirumozhi”. This has 461 pAsurams. These pAsurams are an outpouring of the divine experience of krishNa by periyAzhwAr. Just as how mother yaSOdhA would have experienced krishNa in each and every little aspect as He was growing up, periyAzhwar experienced the same and has expressed it through these pAsurams. Long live such periyAzhwAr.
sollariya Anidhanil sOdhi vandhAn vAzhiyE
sollariya – that which cannot be explained by words (as in, beyond words), Anidhanil – in the month of Ani, sOdhi – swAthi nakshatra/ birth star, vandhAn – came, vAzhiyE – long live
The glories of the month Ani (thamizh calendar month Ani which is from mid June to mid July) and the birth star swAthi on which periyAzhwar descended to this earth cannot be explained in mere words. Long live such a glorious periyAzhwAr who came on Ani-SwAthi.
thodai sUdik kodutthAL thAn thozhundhamappan vAzhiyE
thodai – flower garland, sUdi – wore, thAn koduththAL – she gave, thozhum – worship, thamappan – father, vAzhiyE – long live
thodai means flower garland. AndAL nAchchiyAr is called sUdik koduththavaL (one who gave the flower garland to emperumAn after wearing it herself). That glorious AndAL worships periyAzhwAr as her own father. Not only was periyAzhwAr her father but also her AchAryan. Right from her childhood, periyAzhwAr feeds her bhakthi through stories from Krishna leela, teaching each and everything about emperumAn. Hence, AndAL worships periyAzhwAr as AchAryan who is also her father. In some places, this line would be said as “thodai sUdik koduththALaith thozhum thamappan vAzhiyE” – which reverses the worshipping relation and states that periyAzhwAr worships AndAL who has given her own garland to emperumAn. Because AndAL nAchchiyAr is the divine consort of emperumAn, everyone should worship her as the divine mother. With this perspective in mind, it is also said that periyAzhwAr is the father who worships AndAL who is the divine mother of all. Long live the father of AndAL nAchchiyAr.
selvanambi thannaip pOl siRappuRRAn vAzhiyE
selvanambi – selvanambi, thannaip pOl – like him, siRappuRRAn – glorious, vAzhiyE – long live
selvanambi was a minister in the king’s court in madhurai. He was a great SrIvaishNava. His glories are shown in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi in the padhigam (collection of 10 pAsurams) sung on thirukkOttiyUr perumAL. periyAzhwAr celebrates him as “naLirndha seelan, nayAsalan” which means one who is always calm and compassionate, one who always follows dharma / path of justice. Both selvanambi and his wife were great SrIvaishNavas who were very affectionate towards devotees of emperumAn. If periyAzhwAr glorifies someone, then the magnitude of their greatness can be understood as inconceivable. Such is the glory of selvanambi and periyAzhwAr is equally glorious. Long live such periyAzhwAr.
senRu kizhi aRuththu mAl dheyvam enRAn vAzhiyE
senRu – went , kizhi – the pot with price money, aRuththu – tear, mAl – thirumAl (one who is the husband of mahAlakshmi), dheyvam – God, enrAn – one who said that, vAzhiyE – long live
When periyAzhwAr went to the kings court to establish the supremacy of SrIman nArayaNan as the para dheyvam (the Supreme One), the bag of gold coins which was hung high above as the price money automatically came down to the hands of periyAzhwAr. Long live such periyAzhwAr who proved that thirumAl srIman nArAyaNan is the ultimate lord for all.
villipuththUr nagaraththai viLanga vaiththAn vAzhiyE
villipuththUr – SrivillipuththUr, nagaraththai – made the city, viLanga – glorious, vaiththAn – one who made it so, vAzhiyE – long live
Because periyAzhwAr was born, the dhivyadhesam SrIvillipuththUr attained glory. The dhivyadhESam attained even more glory when AndAL nAchchiyAr also descended to earth in SrIvillipuththUr to become the daughter of periyAzhwAr. Just like how mother yaSOdhA attained all the glories by being a mother and bringing by Krishna even though dhEvaki was the one who gave birth, periyAzhwAr by bringing up AndAL in SrIvillipuththUr attained all glories and glorified srIvillipuththUr. Long live such periyAzhwAr.
vEdhiyarkOn bhattarpirAn mEdhiniyil vAzhiyE
vEdhiyarkOn – Leader of the clan of brAhmaNas, bhattarpirAn – title of periyAzhwAr denoting that he is the leader of all pandits, mEdhiniyil – in this world, vAzhiyE – long live
vEdhiyar kOn means one who is the leader (kOn) of all the brAhmaNas (vEdhiyar). periyAzhwAr is a great stalwart of all SAsthram. He is the leader of all learned pandits which is why he is called bhattarpirAn. Long live such periyAzhwAr in this world. Thus ends the vAzhi thirunAmam of periyAzhwAr.
