Simple Translation

Flocks of dark sparrows, getting up at the time of dawn, are speaking the words of the lord of thirumAlirunjOlai, who is also the lord of dhwArakApuri and is the lord who reclined on a tender banyan leaf. Will their singing in the tune maruL, foretelling the arrival of emperumAn, fructify?

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

kAlai ezhundhirundhu – getting up early in the morning. A query was raised whether sparrows, which are low on intelligence, could get up early in the morning and foretell the arrival of emperumAn. siRiyAchchAn [who was mentioned in the 6th pAsuram of this decad, referred to as the disciple of vangipuraththu nambi) responded to that query, saying “In the place where ANdAL was born, is there any other pastime for birds? Do they have sleep? Hence, getting up at dawn and foretelling emperumAn’s arrival are possible”. This was quoted mercifully by nanjIyar. Just as nammAzhwAr had mercifully said in thiruvAimozhi 6-7-2Urum nAdum ulagamum thannaippOl avanudaiya pErum thArgaLumE pidhaRRa” (making the people in the place where she was born, in the country and in the world, to babble the divine name and the divine icons [conch, disc et al]), all the entities born in the place where ANdAL was born, would also talk only about emperumAn. vangipuraththu nambi, in his dhivya grantham, had said “brAhmE muhUrthE chOththAya chinthayEdh AthmanO hitham l harir harir haririthi vyAharEth vaishNava: pumAn” (One who is a vaishNava should get up early in the morning and think of good things for himself / herself; (s)he should recite the divine name of hari, three times). That which has been ordained for chEthanas (entities with knowledge) is being followed by birds too, which do not have [the same] knowledge.

kariya kuruvikkaNangaL mAlin varavu solli – Since they are dark sparrows, resembling the dark form of emperumAn, they showered benefit through their form. Since they foretold the arrival of emperumAn, they showered benefit through their words too.

mAlin varavu solli maruL pAdudhal meymmai kolO – they were singing in the tune of maruL indhaLam, the way emperumAn was anxiously coming to see ANdAL, and how he was bewildered, without getting in proximity to her place. ANdAL is wondering whether this is true or her bewilderment. Just as it has been mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 34-23 when sIthAp pirAtti wondered when she saw hanuman in front of her, speaking to her “kinnu syAchiththamOhO’ýam bhavEth vAthagathis thviyam l unmAdhajO vikArO vA syAdhiyam mrugathrushNikA ll’ (Is it due to my heart’s bewilderment? Is it the ploy of deity for wind? Have I lost my senses? Has my nature got changed? Is it a mirage?), ANdAL suffered in the same manner in which sIthAp pirAtti had suffered.

sOlai malaip perumAn – one who has mercifully taken residence in thirumAliriunjOlai in order to protect all the chEthanas.

thuvarAvapadhi emperumAn – the term thuvarApadhi refers to [krishNa’s] sixteen thousand consorts through illustration. By referring to him as perumAn, it is hinted that just as horse will always win in a race with elephant despite the large form of elephant, in matters related to love, even if all the sixteen thousand consorts join together, he will be superior to all of them, being a connoisseur.

Alin ilaip perumAn – one who has the cleverness of aghatithaghatanA [ability to bond entities which can never be bonded] by swallowing all the worlds and reclining on a tender banyan leaf which had just then sprouted.

avan vArththai urakkinRadhE – by speaking words about  him, will their hint of emperumAn’s arrival turn out to be true?

Next, we will consider the 9th pAsuram of this decad.
