Oh one who came to uplift the clan of SrI kausalyA, who has expansive eyes with reddish and blackish lines, and which are like a spear engaged in killing! Oh one who has the curved bow! Oh one who has divine shoulders which are like strong mountains! Oh one who melted this cruel sinner’s heart! Oh one who incarnated in the clan of king kakuthstha! Oh one who is my lord and who has the complexion of a bluish cloud! You had earlier slept [inside the palace] on soft mattresses. From now onwards, going into the forest, under a tree’s shadow, how did you learn to sleep on hard rocks?
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
kol aNai mEl vari nedungaN kausalai than kula madhalAy – Oh one who came to uplift the clan of SrI kausalyai who has wide eyes which have reddish and blackish lines and which are radiant like a spear which is engaged in killing!
kuni vil Endhum mal aNaindha varaith thOLA – the bows of archers will be ever ready with the cord drawn and arrows ready to be shot; as a result, it would be curved always. This is referred to in the verse kuni vil Endhum. Through the verse mal aNaindha varaith thOLA, AzhwAr says that even that bow is not required since his shoulders have the strength of a mountain.
val vinaiyEn manam urukkum vagaiyE kaRRAy – Oh one who has as his nature, the art of melting my heart with the beauty of your weapon and your shoulders!
mel aNai mEl mun thuyinRAy – earlier, in ayOdhyA, you used to sleep on beautiful mattress.
inRu inippOy – you, who used to sleep on beautiful mattresses in distinguished places such as residential quarters of mothers, from now onwards, in the times to come
viyan kAna maraththin nIzhal – under the shadow of tress which do not have leaves, inside the cruel forests. Through the term viyan kAna maram it is indicated that living in forest is loathsome even for those who are habitual dwellers of forest
kallaNai mEl kaN thuyilak kaRRanaiyO – have you learnt to sleep on rocks as mattresses?
kAguththA kariya kOvE – these activities are not appropriate for your lineage; these are not appropriate for the beauty of your divine form too.
