avathArikai (Introduction)

Though the cowherd girls were engaging in love-quarrel with kaNNan, they all admit their defeat and say it explicitly, in this pAsuram.

Simple Translation

The auspicious and beautiful divine garland is shining on your divine chest. You have donned the lush feathers of peacock on your divine crown. You have donned a light dress on your divine waist. You have decorated your ears with a cluster of flowers, fittingly. You mingled well with girls, whose hair was full of honey and fragrance. As an outlet for your happiness, you played on your flute, beautifully. We, the cowherd girls, desire that you should come only for us, one day, and play the flute for us. But, the music from your flute will not come.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

mangala nal vanamAlai mArvil ilanga – vanamAlai, the divine garland has, within it, all that is auspicious in the world, and it is beautiful, too. It shines brightly on your divine chest, just as pEyAzhwAr had said in mUnRAm thiruvandhAdhi 59 “maipOl neduvaraivAy thAzhum aruvipOl thAr kidappa sUzhum thirumAmaNivaNNan” (Just as streams flow down from both sides of a dark mountain, garlands come down from the divine shoulders towards the feet, surrounding his divine chest. pirAtti is surrounding emperumAn, being unable to let go of this beautiful form of emperumAn)

mayil thazhaip peeli sUdi – donning the rich feathers of peacock on the divine crown.

pongiLa Adai araiyil sAththi – wearing a very light dress on the divine waist

pUngoththuk kAdhil puNarappeydhu kongu naRum kuzhalArgaLOdu kuzhaindhu – wearing a cluster of flowers appropriately on the ears and mingling with cowherd girls who have locks which are smelling sweet and fragrant, like honey.

kuzhal inidhu Udhi vandhAy – mingling with all of us, the cowherd girls, who were engaging in love-quarrel with you and who were thinking of separating from you. As an outlet for the ecstasy which resulted from such mingling, you came playing sweetly on your flute.

engalukkE orunAL vandhu Udha un kuzhal innisai pOdharAdhE – you are common to all. Your music from the flute is meant for all to hear and enjoy. When such is the case, we desire that you should come to us in every place that we go to and play the flute only for us. Even if you wish to play the flute, the music from the flute will not come out. Such is the character of your flute. The meaning of this is – the reference to music from flute is only being together with kaNNan. The meaning for the phrase “music from your flute will not come out” is – mingling with all of us is not proper for you. You are greater than all of us. This being the case, being together with us, who are all ignorant, is not appropriate for you. The cowherd girls admit their defeat, in this pAsuram.

We will next take up the last pAsuram, 6.10, of this decad.
