perumAL thirumozhi >> 4th Decad << Previous avathArikai (Introduction) Even if one were to be a peak in thirumalai, only a few will be able to climb the hill and hence a few alone will be able to enjoy the peak. Instead of that, AzhwAr, in this pAsuram, says that he desires to be a jungle stream which is apt to be enjoyed by everyone. vAnAlum mAmadhi pOl veN kudaik kIzh mannavar tham kOnAgi vIRRirundhu koNdAdum selvaRiyEn thenar pUnjOlaith thiruvEngadamalai mEl kAnARAyp pAyum karuththudaiyEn AvEnE Word-by-Word Meanings vAn Alum mAmadhi pOl – just like the full moon which has brightened the sky with its light veN kudai kIzh – under the shadow of the regal umbrella (a symbol of righteous ruling) mannavar tham kOnAgi vIRRidundhu – heading the assembly as the king of all kings koNdAdum selvu – wealth which is praised (by all) aRiyEn – I will not consider that as important thEn Ar pU sOlai – having gardens with flowers dripping with honey thiruvEngadam malai mEl – on top of thiruvEngadam hills kAn Aru Ay pAyum – flowing like a jungle-river karuththu udaiyEn AvEnE – I will desire that Simple Translation I do not desire to be the king of all kings, sitting under the regal white coloured umbrella which is like a full moon spreading its brightness in the sky, being praised by all for the wealth that it brings. Instead, I desire to be a flowing river in the jungle atop thiruvEngadam hill, which has gardens with flowers full of honey. vyAkyAnam vAnALum mAmadhi pOl veN kudai kIzh – Just as moon brightens the entire sky with its bright and cool rays, bringing the entire world under one regal, white coloured, umbrella. mannavar tham kOnAgi – just as the assembly of stars has taken refuge under the moon, all the kings of the world have bowed down to AzhwAr, who is the king of all kings. vIRRirundhu koNdAdum selvaRiyEn – the wealth of sitting (on a throne), being distinct from everyone else, does not appear to be great, to my mind. thEnAr pUnjOlaith thiruvEngadam malai mEl – on top of thiruvEngadam hill, with gardens having flowers which have abundance of honey. kAnARayp pAyum karuththu udaiyEn AvEnE – if it is a river such as kAvEri which originates in a mountain and runs down towards plain, it will keep flowing down. Instead of that, AzhwAr says he desires to be a river in the jungle, which originates at one place on the hill and dries up in some other place within the hill itself. Next, we will take up the 8th pAsuram in this decad. adiyEn krishNa rAmAnuja dhAsan archived in https://divyaprabandham.koyil.org pramEyam (goal) – https://koyil.org pramANam (scriptures) – http://granthams.koyil.org pramAthA (preceptors) – http://acharyas.koyil.org SrIvaishNava education/kids portal – http://pillai.koyil.org
