Simple Translation
Oh, one with the dark locks, which appear like a black pigment, decorated with distinguished flower and who incarnated in the clan of the king of vidhEha, to brighten the clan! Mercifully listen to the appeal of this servitor. sugrIva, who is identical to perumAL in the qualities of happiness and sorrow, stayed together with perumAL, in order to search for your highness. perumAL, who is apt for that state with auspicious qualities and who is the lord of those in ayOdhyA, mercifully stated these events [which are identifications] to this servitor. All the identifications which this servitor stated, came in this manner. This is the divine ring, which he wore on his divine finger.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
maiththagu mAmalark kuzhalAy – Oh, one who has locks which are dark like a black pigment and which are decorated with distinguished flowers! These distinctions are not mentioned looking at pirAtti’s present condition; hanuman says these to emphasise that her locks are apt to be in this manner. Unable to bear separation from perumAL, she has not taken any care of herself and her locks have gathered dust and are without any flower.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that just as hanuman had earlier said of pirAtti’s locks “neRindha karum kuzhal” (3.10.1), even though her locks had lost their shine, he could imagine how they would have been and hence could say in this manner. It could also have been said in this manner to bring auspiciousness to her locks.
vaidhEvI – hanuman looks at the way in which she has disregarded her form and calls her this way.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that this too is coming through hereditary manner.
viNNappam – he beseeches her to listen to his words and keep them in her divine mind.
oththa pugazh vAnarakkOn – before SrI rAma had seen sugrIva, just as it has been mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam kishkindhA kANdam 4.18 “sugrIvam nAtham ichchathi” (SrI rAma desires sugrIva as his lord) and in SrI rAmAyaNam kishkindhA kANdam 4.19 “sugrIvan SaraNam gatha:” (SrI rAma took refuge under sugrIva), as mentioned by iLaiya perumAL [lakshmaNa], SrI rAma revered sugrIva. After seeing him in person, SrI rAma, with fire as the witness, made friendship with sugrIva, as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam kishkindhA kANdam 5.15 “thvam vayasyO’si hruthyOmEhyEkam dhu:kkham sukhanchanau ” (SrI rAma tells sugrIva ‘You are like a friend accepted by my mind; happiness and sorrow for the two of us are now the same’), with sugrIva having the eminence of being synchronous with SrI rAma in terms of sorrows and happiness. He is the king of monkeys, as mentioned by hanuman. The reason for saying this is that he has the army of monkeys to send in huge assemblies in various directions, in order to find out the location of sIthAp pirAtti, as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 30.3 “yAm kapInAm sahasrANi” (thousands of monkeys, to search for pirAtti).
udan irundhu – earlier, SrI rAma was in mAlyavAn [a mountain on the outskirts of kishkindhA] and sugrIva was in kishkindhA. Now, they have joined together.
ninaith thEda – while sending monkeys and other animals in various directions for searching your highness, just as it has been mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam kishkindhA kANdam 44.1 “viSEshENa thu sugrIvO hanumathi artham ukthavAn” (sugrIva mahArAja informed special messages to hanuman), unlike the others, sugrIva mahArAja showed distinct affection towards me and decided in his mind “He is capable of carrying out this task”
aththagu sIr ayOdhdhiyar kOn adaiyALam ivai mozhindhAn – after separating from you, perumAL had forgotten his sleep and food; he wouldn’t even recognise being bitten and crawled upon by insects. Even if any enjoyable food was given to him, he would think of your highness and not eat the food given. He had qualities of affection towards your highness, to be apt for searching for your highness. Since SrI bharathAzhwAn had taken the divine sandals of perumAL to be kept on the throne and rule over the kingdom as the representative of SrI rAma, perumAL could be considered as the king of ayOdhyA. All these events which adiyEn informed your highness were all mercifully told me by perumAL, through his divine mouth. Otherwise, would this servitor know about the incident where your highness had tied perumAL with strung jasmine flowers?
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that perumAL had the sorrowness which was apt for this sorrowful search and he had the relationship to be the king of ayOdhyA.
iththagaiyAl adaiyALam – thus, hanuman informed pirAtti that all the identifications which he had told her, came to him in this manner. After saying this …
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that hanuman tells pirAtti that among the events confided in him by perumAL, these are the ones which he could remember and reveal to her.
Idhu avan kai mOdhiramE – Saying that this is the divine ring on his divine fingers, as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 36.2 “rAmanAmAngitham chEdham paSya dhEvi anguLeeyakam” (mercifully look at this divine ring of SrI rAma which carries his divine name), hanuman gave pirAtti the divine ring which SrI rAma had worn on his divine ring.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that hanuman tells pirAtti “There need not be any doubt regarding the identifications. If there is still any doubt, this should be sufficient to clear all the doubts”, giving her the divine ring, giving her life through that.
We shall next consider the 9th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
