After combing krishNa’s divine locks [as seen in the decad 2.5], yaSOdhAp pirAtti wanted to decorate his locks with flowers. However, krishNa thought that he should go for grazing calves. He desired to have a stick in order to control them when he takes them for grazing. Since she did not like that, she did not give him the stick. He started crying. In order to divert him from his crying, she called out to the crow “akkAkkAy, bring a stick” several times [as seen in the previous decad]. This made him happy. She now decided to decorate him with flowers. She started looking for flowers such as seNbagam [champaka], malligai [jasmine], sengazhunIr [red water-lily], iruvAtchi [Tuscan jasmine] etc, which were distinguished, differing from one another through their colour and fragrance. She told him that she will apply each of these flowers on his divine locks, calling him to come to her. periyAzhwAr, desiring to experience the same joy which she had experienced in decorating krishNa with these flowers, took over her pathos, called him for donning the flowers using her words and enjoys that flavour, in this thirumozhi.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says the following: periyAzhwAr, in his first composition of thiruppallANdu, called out to prapannars [those who had surrendered to emperumAn], kEvalars [those who desire to enjoy their AthmAs, after getting liberated from samsAram, instead of carrying out servitude to emperumAn, as the ultimate benefit] and aiSwaryArthis [those who desire wealth, remaining in samsAram]. When they came willingly to him, he included them in carrying out mangaLASAsanam to emperumAn. Among them, he referred to those who were filled with rajO and thamO guNams [the qualities of passion and ignorance, respectively], who were similar to crows in their nature, and told them “We will not allow you, who are servitors of others, in our midst”, frightening them. He showed them emperumAn’s auspicious qualities of simplicity and eminence, gradually took them to higher levels, created interest in them in carrying out mangaLASAsanam to emperumAn, making them to think and speak like him. He became satisfied, as a result. He mentioned the benefit to those who learn his pAsurams in the earlier decad. Once he had given bath and combed the divine locks of krishNa, he had to decorate his locks with flowers. He considers sumanAs [those who were good at heart, viz. those who have AthmaguNam, that they are servitors of emperumAn] as flowers apt to be donned on the locks of krishNa. He mercifully reveals this meaning, through yaSOdhAp pirAtti’s words of “pUchchUda vArAy” (come for bedecking with flowers) as a pretext, in this thirumozhi.

We shall next consider the 1st pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
