krishNa killed kamsan who came, full of anger, to fight with him. He tore the mouth of bakAsuran who came to harm him, slowing him down a bit while coming. Bring a stick for the one who is running ahead of young calves, in order to graze them, with his divine locks swaying on either side. Bring a stick for the one who is the benefactor for celestial entities.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
kaRuththu … – kaRuppu – fury. krishNa killed kamsan who came to fight him, with anger.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that just as thirumangai AzhwAr had said in periya thirumozhi 7-7-7 “kaRuththuk kanjanai anja munindhAy” (kamsan became frightened of your anger; you killed him), kamsan was awaiting krishNa’s incarnation, with a drawn sword to kill him as soon as he incarnated. Alternatively, in an earlier birth, kamsan had been born as kAlanEmi. He came with anger, opposing emperumAn. The scent of that anger was still lingering in this birth too, as kamsan. After seeing all his supporters getting killed by krishNa, with none left to send, kamsan decided to bring krishNa through akrUrar. When krishNa came to mathurA, with akrUrar, kamsan stood opposing him, for the first time, directly.
poRuththu … – bakAsuran, came to harm krishNa [with the form of a crane]. When he came flying fast, krishNa slowed him down and tore his mouth.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that bakAsuran came in the form of a crane, with his mouth wide open, crying aloud to harm krishNa. Effortlessly, krishNa tore his mouth and protected himself.
neRiththa … – while running ahead of the calves, when he was grazing them, krishNa’s divine locks, which were curled up tightly and were hanging in the front, swayed from side to side
siRukkanRu …– Bring a stick for one who is going to graze young calves.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the young calves were not only not involved in protecting themselves, they wouldn’t even know how to eat grass. Hence, krishNa would take some grass in his hands, squeeze them well, and put them into the mouth of the calf. When the calf eats it, he would be happy. This is how he was grazing the young calves.
dhEva pirAnukku – since he destroyed monsters such as kamsan et al, he became a benefactor for celestial entities. Bring a stick for such an entity.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that AzhwAr says that krishNa is the benefactor for both the entities in leelA vibhUthi [samsAram] who look up to him for their protection and the nithyasUris in nithya vibhUthi, thus being the benefactor for both the realms.
We shall next consider the 4th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
