After my father and mother begot me and abandoned me, oh, one who remained in close proximity being father and mother for me who has natural servitude! Oh, one who is having beautiful radiance which is having distinguished greatness! Other than your divine form which resembles black pigment, I won’t joyfully praise any dhivyadhESams.

Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

emmAnum … – I can forget you only if you had helped to the extent done by worldly people. You cannot be said to have helped just at the level of mother and father; even when they abandoned me, you showed up and helped me.

Mother and father, being blinded by desires, will give birth to a child and then abandon the child considering the child to be “yauvana virOdhi” (obstacle for their youthful enjoyment). Since the AthmA has become used to the parents in countless births, he will only say “ammE” (mother!) and “appA” (father!) [when in distress]; in that, when he calls out saying “ammE”, bhagavAn will respond to him in a feminine voice saying “What?”; and when he calls out saying “appA”, bhagavAn will respond to him in a masculine voice saying “What?” In this manner, bhagavAn will respond to me the way he expects response.

adiyEnukku … – Unlike the level of such parents, for me who is having natural relationship towards you, you remained such mother and father.

nal mAna oL sudarE … – Oh, one who is having distinguished, unlimitedly radiant light! When asked “Isn’t that seen only in paramapadham?” AzhwAr says “Oh, one who has arrived in thirunaRaiyUr and remained in close proximity and is complete in auspicious qualities!”

un maimmAna vaNNam … – Other than you, who have the complexion of black pigment, which is rejuvenating, I will not joyfully praise, even if they tried to indulge me in them. Here, “others” imply other dhivydhESams.

maimmAna vaNNam – As dark as black pigment; like black pigment.
