pravESam (Introduction)

In the earlier thirumozhi (divine verses), periyAzhwAr had enjoyed krishNa’s activity of chappANi (clapping his hands) at the same period of time that yaSOdhAp pirAtti had done, though he had come at a much later point of time. He enjoyed that with overflowing affection, and with her pathos. When little krishNa took thaLar nadai (tender steps), she desired to enjoy his activity, as an outlet for her deep affection. Just as she had enjoyed that activity through her words, AzhwAr too, assuming her pathos, enjoys his activity at the same period as hers, and becomes joyous.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that in the earlier thirumozhi, AzhwAr had brought out, through krishNa’s activity of chappANi, Akinchanyam in upAya upEya bhAvam (absence of anything with us in attaining emperumAn and in carrying out servitude to him). Now, using his thaLar nadai as a pretext, AzhwAr brings out the fact that anukUla prIthi (friendly disposition towards favourable entities) and prathikUla nirasanam (extermination of unfavourable entities) will happen, based on the conduct of the prapannan (one who has surrendered to emperumAn). For everyone, krishNa’s activity (of thaLar nadai) will be the reason for immersion, either due to devotion or due to fear [for the favourable ones, it will be a reason for devotion since krishNa has started walking and he will come towards them with his mercy and for the unfavourable ones, it will be a reason for fear since he has now started walking and he would annihilate them much more quickly].

We shall next consider the 1st pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
