Simple Translation
Oh, one who made the strong SakatAsuran to roll [down to his death] such that the celestial entiti4s were joyous and one who consumed the poison applied on top of pUthanA’s bosoms, as if it were nectar! Oh, my dark-complexioned calf, who threw a calf in which the monster vathsAsuran had pervaded, to hit against a wood apple raw fruit [inside which another monster had pervaded] such that wood apples would scatter down [and killing both the monsters] inside the forest! Oh, one who is like an elephant going mightily in the battlefield such that monsters such as dhEnukAsuran, murAsuran and the cruel and strong narakAsuran died! Oh, one who is obedient to the herd-folk and who has the arrogance of a bull which is battle-ready! You should dance; you should dance.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
vAnavar … – celestial entities prayed to you to incarnate on earth such that the excessive load on earth, on account of monstrous entities, would get reduced. Oh, one who made those celestial entities to be joyous by annihilating the monstrous entities even before reaching the age which is fit to fight with them! When SakatAsuran, a monster, pervaded a wheel near you, to harm you, due to delay in being fed bosom milk, you were kicking your legs, to draw attention. That monster got caught between your legs such that your kick made him roll down to his death. When pUthanA, another monster, came in the guise of your mother, applying poison on her bosoms in order to kill you, oh, one who consumed her life along with that poison! When the text is nanjamudhu uNdavanE, it would mean one who consumed that poison as nectar. harivamSam vishNu parvam 6-39 says “sthanyam thath vishasammiSram rasyamAsIjjagadh gurO:” (That bosom milk, which had been mixed with poison, was sweet for krishNa, who is the lord of all the worlds). thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that it was due to my [reference here is to AzhwAr] fortune that the poison became nectar-like. This refers to the auspicious time when krishNa was born.
kAnagam … – when krishNa went to the forest to graze calves, two demons had pervaded a calf and a wood apple raw fruit, in order to harm him. This part of the pAsuram narrates the incident when krishNa threw one entity against the other, killing both of them. Oh, one who stood like a dark-complexioned calf, who threw a calf on a few wood-apple raw fruits to make them fall down, in the forest! Through this narration, the way his divine form became splendorous on account of killing the enemies of his followers and the way he was obedient towards his followers are mentioned.
dhEnukan … – Oh, one who is like a powerful elephant, entering a battlefield, and destroyed monsters such as dhEnukAsuran, murAsuran and the strong, cruel narakAsuran!
enakku … – for my sake, you should perform sengIrai, once.
AyargaL … – Oh, one who is obedient towards herd folk such that they could be proud saying “He is ours”, due to which you are arrogant like a bull which is ready for battle! You should mercifully engage with sengIrai; you should mercifully engage with sengIrai.
