avathArikai (Introduction)

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that apart from attaining krishNa or losing him, the herd-women were worried saying “He has jumped on kALiyan. What will befall him?” They are certain that they will exist only if he exists.

Simple Translation

krishNa jumped into the pond, which had plenty of lotus flowers and agitated it. Consequently, kALiyan, a snake, rose up in fury, spitting out poison. krishNa pulled that kALiyan by his tail and jumped on top of his hoods which had spread out, due to his anger, making the snake to spit out poison. We will perish on account of the one who swayed his divine form, on top of that snake and danced. We will perish on account of the one who stamped that kALiyan such that the snake grew thin and fell down at krishNa’s feet, seeking refuge.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

thadam … – Before kALiyan entered it, the pond was famously known as “expansive lotus-pond”. Only later did it become fiery, poisonous pond. Just as it has been mentioned in SrI vishNu purANam 5-7-11 and 12 “nipapAtha hradhE thathra sarpa rAjasya vEgatha: l thEnAdhipathadhAthathra kshObhithassa mahAhradha: ll” (Since he jumped into the pond with speed, after getting on top of the tree, waves formed in the centre of the pond and spread), krishNa jumped with a high speed, into the pond, agitating it.

vidam padu nAgaththai vAl paRRi iRththu – kALiyan, who was lying inside the pond, got furious because it was agitated and rose up in anger, spitting poison. krishNa, without considering the snake’s anger, pulled him by his tail.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that kALiyan was malicious and krishNa pulled him by his tail. He further says that krishNa jumped on his spread-out hoods such that he spat out poison. Despite krishNa jumping on to his spread-out heads, kALiyan, without becoming tired, moved his heads. The herd-women say that it was their fortune that krishNa, without becoming tired, stood on top of kALiyan and danced.

padam padu paindhalai mEl ezhap pAyndhu – krishNa jumped onto the expansive, spread-out hoods of kALiyan with a roar such that kALiyan spat out poison in anger.

udambai asaiththAnAl inRu muRRum – Looking at kALiyan’s fury and agitation as well as krishNa jumping on to his hoods, the favourable herd-men and herd-women, seeing from the bank of the pond, thought “krishNa is going to get caught in the mouth of the snake; all of us will perish” and fell down, unconscious. They say that they will all perish on account of the one who was shaking his divine form on top of the snake.

uchchiyil ninRAnAl inRu muRRum – They say that they will all perish on account of the one who stood on the hoods, pressing it hard until the snake became weak and fell at his divine feet, seeking refuge. Through this, the women say that the one, who controlled the unfavourable one [kALiyan] and removed the worries of the favourable ones [themselves], by his activities [of stealing their bangles and saris] made them worried. Hence, they say that they will perish that day. The reason for saying a second time that they will perish is because of excessive anguish.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the pAsuram should be read as padam padu paindhalai mEl ezhap pAyndhittup poygai kalakki, vidam padu nAgaththai vAl paRRi Irththu, udambai asaiththAnAl inRu muRRum, uchchiyil ninRAnAl inRu muRRum. He says that krishNa stood on top of its head and carried out abhayap pradhAnam [giving refuge] to his affectionate ones such that they did not fear. They say that on that day, their target will be realised [viz. they will perish].

We shall next consider the 4thpAsuram of this thirumozhi.
