avathArikai (Introduction)

kaNNan had told a gOpikA (cowherd girl) to wait for him on the mound in the river yamunA. Despite waiting for him through the night, he had not come there. When he came in the early hours of the morning, she got praNaya rOsham (anger arising out of affection). This pAsuram describes her love-quarrel towards him.

Simple Translation

Oh the son of vadudhEva! There are many women in this AyarppAdi with beautiful flowers and fragrant hair. Knowing fully well that I do not have the desire to hug your divine chest, listening to your false words, I came to this huge mound in the middle of river yamunA, waiting for your arrival in the dew which is pouring like heavy rain, feeling shy, trembling with fear and shyness, until the early hours of the morning.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

Ermalarp pUnguzhal Ayar mAdhar – cowherd girls, with beautiful flowers, with their hair giving fragrance to the flowers

enaip palar uLLa ivvUril – in this thiruvAyppAdi, where many such people have gathered

undhan mArvu thazhuvudhaRku Asaiyinmai aRindhu aRIndhE – Knowing fully well that “This town has many women. You are a person common to all the women. Hence, it is not proper on my part to desire that only I should hug you”

un than poyyaik kEttu – one false word which you said made me not to understand your svarUpam (basic nature) that you are common to everyone. What is that false word? “Do I have a refuge other than you? Do I know a girl other than you?” Hearing your words which you said as if you were obedient to me…

kUr mazhai pOl panik kUdhal eydhi – getting caught in the chillness of dew which was pouring like heavy rains

kUsi – feeling ashamed, thinking “Will anyone see me waiting like this, for you?”

nadungi – trembling, out of fear and the chillness

yamunaiyARRil – did I stand in a secluded place which no one knows? Did I not stand in the yamunA river, which everyone frequents?

vAr maNal kunRil pulara ninREn – it is accepted that I had to stand. Did I stand in a narrow street where I could stand alone? Did I not stand on a huge mound on the shore of river yamunA where people gather together, play and make merry? Since it is a place frequented by many, instead of people thinking that I have also come here to play, did I not make it obvious to them that I have come here to unite with kaNNan and be happy?

vAsudhEvA – Oh the son of vasudhEva! I did not stand here with faith in you, a habitual liar, when someone would ask me “Why are you standing here?” Since you are the son of vasudhEvar, who does not know lies, and who always speaks truth, I believed you would also speak only the truth.

un varavu pArththE – I stood like this, with the desire of seeing your beauty.

We will next take up the 2nd pAsuram of this decad.
