avathArikai (Introduction)

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that the women, seen in the previous pAsuram, did not wish to move away from that place, until they hear the final word on their pleading [that they will perish if krishNa did not respond]. What were they doing, standing like that? They were recalling his incarnations, his amazing activities in those incarnations and the qualities exhibited in those activities, to such an extent that these would form the basis for their complaints in the subsequent pAsurams.

Word-by-Word Meanings

kuNdalam – ear rings

Simple Translation

krishNa’s divine ear rings dropped down to the level of his shoulders and swayed. His divine locks too lowered to the same extent and swayed. The divine necklace, worn on the neck, reached down to his divine navel and swayed. All the entities such as sages, celestial entities et al in the eight directions, fell on the ground in front of krishNa, and praised him, bowing their heads down [in respect]. krishNa gathered the saris of women, who had decorated their locks with flowers such that beetles were constantly settling on them. He climbed atop a kurundham tree and sat. The women say that they will perish because of him. They further say that they will perish by the end of the day if he does not return their dresses, despite their pleading to him “Return us our dresses”

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

kuNdalam thAzhak kuzhal thAzha nAN thAzhakuNdalam – ear rings. They came down to the shoulders and swayed; divine locks, which were complementary to those ear rings, also came down to the shoulders and swayed; the divine chain, adorned on the divine neck came down to the divine navel and swayed.

eN thisaiyOrum irainjith thozhudhEththa – sages, celestial entities et al, who were in the eight directions, looking at the beauty of this divine form [of krishNa] and his distinguished divine activities, lost their pride [that they were ISvarans], bowed down to him and praised him.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that sages and celestial entities, in the eight directions, attracted by the divine beauty of emperumAn, just as it has been said in SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 3.27 “pumsAm dhrishtichiththApahAriNIm” (SrI rAma stole the eyes and minds of men), paid obeisance to krishNa and praised him. They performed anjali (cupping the palms together, in salutation) and, in complete humility, offered mangaLASAsanam to him.

vaNdamar pUnguzhalAr thugil kaikkoNdu – gathering the dresses left on the river bank by women who had decorated their locks with flowers on which beetles settle forever…

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that even though the women say that krishNa has gathered their dresses, their expectation was also that only [that he should gather their dresses]. Their wish is that just as he gathered their dresses, he should gather them too.

viN thOy maraththAnAl inRu muRRum – due to this person, who has climbed atop the kurundham tree which has reached to the sky, we will perish.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that though krishNa had gone to the top of the kurundham tree which had grown tall to reach the skies, they will not leave until he converses with them.

vENdavum thArAnAl inRu muRRum – we will perish on account of the one, who does not yield despite appealing to him “Return us our dresses mercifully”.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that by using the term tharAnAl instead of kodAnAl, AzhwAr joins himself with the group of herd-girls. He thinks that the pathos and connection which krishNa and the herd-girls have for each other, are his benefits. The girls keep coming around krishNa repeatedly because they think that it is because of his infatuation with them that he has gathered their dresses.

We shall next consider the 3rd pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
