avathArikai (Introduction)

When yaSOdhAp pirAtti told him [as in the previous pAsuram] “viththaganE ingE pOdharAyE” (Oh, one who is an amazing entity, you should come here), instead of coming to the place where she called him to come, krishNa entered someone else’s house, ate food stuff which they had made for a vratham [a ceremonial fast]. A lady came to yaSOdhAp pirAtti and complained to her. This pAsuram describes this narrative.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that it is customary in the clan of herd-people to observe fast on the day of SravaNam star. A lady comes to yaSOdhAp pirAtti, mentions the preparations which she had made for the ceremony, krishNa’s mischiefs at her house and tells yaSOdhAp pirAtti to control her son.

Simple Translation

Oh, yaSOdhAp pirAtti, who is complete with auspicious qualities! Along with reddish paddy and rice, green gram, jaggery, fragrant ghee and milk, I had prepared dishes such as pAyasam and apUpam for observing SravaNa vratham, for the last twelve months. I knew the quality of this boy, earlier too. He swallowed all the food stuff which I had prepared for the vratham, without leaving behind anything and says “I would like to eat more”. He had left our place, as if he had nothing to do with whatever had happened. Call your son to your side. Is this a way of bringing up a child, allowing him to engage in carrying out mischiefs?

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

sennel … – reddish, pure rice, grown from fertile, hard soil; green gram which has been obtained from crops grown on similar soil; jaggery obtained after heating sugar cane extract, without any fault; milk from cows heated to one fourth of original measure, setting resultant milk to curd, churning the resultant curd and obtaining ghee, milk obtained from healthy cows; with all these …

panniraNdu thiruvONam attEn – I had been preparing pAyasam and apUpam (appam) during for the last twelve thiruvONam (SravaNam star).

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says further here that krishNa would not wait for the vratham to be completed and take the food stuff offered. He would eat even before it is offered to deities. parisu refers to offering desired materials apt for one’s form.

paNdum ippiLLai parisu aRivan – I knew the nature of this child [krishNa] earlier too. In other words, even as I prepared the food stuff for SravNa vratham, this boy would start his mischiefs and eat up the food stuff even before offering the prepared food to deities. This time too, he has done the same mischief.

ellAm vizhingittu – gathering all the food stuff, prepared for this thiruvONam vratham, and swallowing them, without leaving anything behind.

innam ugappan nAn enRu solli – not being satiated even after eating all the food stuff, during this thiruvONam vratham, he said that he would desire to have some more food

pOndhu ninRAn – he left that place and came here, as if he had nothing to do with whatever had happened.

un magan thannai asOdhai nangAy kUvik koLLAy – Oh, yaSOdhAp pirAtti! Call your son to your vicinity such that he would not be able to indulge in any mischief there

ivaiyum silavE – Shouldn’t one, who had given birth to a child, bring up the child in a protective way such that he would not indulge in mischiefs? Is this the way that one would bring up a child?

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that when the lady complained to yaSOdhAp pirAtti about krishNa, he became furious and told yaSOdhAp pirAtti “They are telling only lies about me”. yaSOdhAp pirAtti, believing his words, asked the lady who complained “Should I believe your words? Or, should I believe his words?” The lady told her “It is not only that he had carried out mischiefs. The way that you are asking us, who have come to complain to you, is indeed a way!” [in sarcasm]

We shall next consider the 8th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
