Simple Translation

[krishNa tells yaSOdhAp pirAtti] How will it affect you and these girls who are laughing, if my ears swell and pain? yaSOdhAp pirAtti says “It was my fault that I had not done this when you were younger since I thought that you would be unable to bear the pain in your head if I had inserted the cotton thread then. Oh, hrishIkESa, who had killed the monster who came in the form of a bull ‘arishtanEmi’ when he came opposing! You threw the monster in the form of a calf on another monster, who had taken the form of a wood-apple, killing both. Oh, one who is like my eyes! You have seen all the children in this village, who are roaming around, after increasing the holes in their ears by inserting the thread”

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

kArigai … – krishNa asked yaSOdhAp pirAtti “How does it affect these girls who are laughing and you, waiting to insert this thread in my ears when my ears swell and burn?” He went some distance away from her.

thAriyAdhAgil … – yaSOdhAp pirAtti blames herself, saying “I should have done this when you were much younger. Since your head would have pained if you were unable to tolerate the pain then, I had not done it. It was my fault”. Further, she says …

chErilyil … – “Don’t you see children of your age in the village, roaming around, inserting the cotton thread and enlarging the holes in their ears?” When krishNa stood, appearing to agree to her inserting the thread in his ears …

Er vidai … – just as it has been mentioned in periya thirumozhi 10-7-13 “vambavizh kAnaththu mAlvidai” (with the dark bulls in the forest which had fragrant breeze), you had killed the bull arishtanEmi which came opposing you; you had thrown a monster who was in the form of a calf, in the grazing area, on another monster who was in the form of a wood-apple, killing both of them. Oh, one who has he divine name of hrishIkESa since you control the senses of all those who behold you! Oh, one who is like my eyes!

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that krishNa had killed the monstrous bulls which came opposing him. Just as periyAzhwAr had mentioned in his periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 3-3-7 “kanRin uruvAgi mEy pulaththE vandha kaLLa asurarai …” (the deceptive monster who came in the form of a calf in the grazing field …), he had killed the monsters who came in the form of calf and wood-apple. irudIkEsA – Oh, one who controls the senses such that they do not engage with worldly pursuits, through your will and your beauty! Oh, one who is like my eyes! He says that for AzhwAr, in all situations, krishNa remains as his eyes.

We shall next consider the 11th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
