When the celestial entities surrendered to emperumAn, the mountain manthara was anchored closely, as the churning staff, in the milky ocean which was deep. Snake vAsuki, which was like a strong rope, was coiled around the mountain as the churning rope. You should clap with those divine hands. Oh, one who has the complexion of dark cloud! You should clap.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

adaindhu … – having been cursed by sage dhurvAsa, losing all their wealth as a result of that, with their dwelling places seized by monsters and driven away, due to which desiring amarathvam (state of living forever, without death), celestial entities came and surrendered, as mentioned in SrI vishNu purANam 1-9-65 “SaraNam thvAm anuprApthA: samasthA dhEvathAgaNA:” (All the celestial entities came and surrendered to you). The word adaindhittu has got shortened to give the meaning of adaindhida, just as the word vaNangi in thiruvAimozhi 1-3-8 pAsuram “nalam kazhal vaNangi” has got shortened to give the meaning of the word vaNanga.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, rearranges the verse as amarargaL midaindhu adaindhitta which would mean that the celestial entities came crowding and surrendered to you. To help them, you had added a few herbs to make the milky ocean as curd and anchored mountain manthara in it, just as it has been mentioned in nANmugan thiruvandhAdhi 49malai Amai mEl vaiththu” (keeping manthara atop tortoise).

Azhkadal … – Not considering the unfathomable milky ocean as his mattress, crowding it [with the mountain, tortoise, rope etc and the celestial as well as monstrous entities to churn].

mandharam … – just as it has been mentioned in SrI vishNu purANam 1-9-84 “mandhAnam mantharam kruthvA” (using the mountain manthara as churning staff), anchoring the great mountain manthara as the churning staff.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the word nAtti refers to – to anchor the mountain well on the back of tortoise which was supporting it, since curd was preventing the mountain to rest on the tortoise’s shell owing to its thickness.

vadam … – just as it has been mentioned in SrI vishNu purANam 1-9-84 “yOgthram kruthvAcha vAsukim” (utilising snake vAsuki, who is like a strong rope, as the churning rope), utilising the strong vAsuki as the churning rope and coiling it around the mountain manthara.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that vAsuki was like a long rope used for pulling chariots during uthsavams [temple functions, for carrying the idols of emperumAn and ubhayanAchchimArs].

kadaindhitta … – you had made the celestial and monster entities to churn initially; when they became tired and stepped out, you took their place and churned the ocean, just as it has been said in thiruvAimozhi 8-1-1alaikadal kadaindha appan” (the lord who churned the ocean with waves), until nectar ebbed out. You should clap with the hands with which you had churned the milky ocean.

kAr mugil … – Oh, one whose form became shiningly dark due to the happiness of fulfilling the desire of your followers! You should clap.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that his form was like a dark cloud which was going to help the people of the world [through rains].

We shall next consider the last pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
