Simple Translation

Did you see kaNNa pirAn, who is the lord in harmony, who is dark in his mind, just like his divine form outside and who is like a dark, huge cloud? We have seen that perumAn who mercifully comes along with his friends, in SrI brindhAvanam, just like a constellation of stars which are desired by those who desire other benefits, being full in the sky.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

poruththam udaiya nambiyai – she had said of him, in the previous pAsuram, as poruththamili (one without harmony). She says “My calling him like that is a mistake. Disharmony will apply only to those who are different on their inside, from their outside. Will it apply to kaNNan, who is similar both on the inside and outside?”

nambiyai – she says that he is complete in all qualities, even in harmony. In which quality does he have complete harmony?

puRam pOL uLLum kariyAnai – Apart from him, is there anyone who has complete harmony in being dark both on the inside and outside? Is he like chakravarthith thirumagan [divine son of emperor dhaSaratha] who, due to his quality of compassion is white inside, while being dark outside?

karuththaip pizhaiththu ninRa – she explains how he is dark inside, just like he is outside. The meaning for this term is – “Remaining, contrary to my thoughts”. In other words, during the time when he was united with her, he had said “I will not separate from you. If I do, I will not be able to sustain myself”, even while thinking of separation in his dark mind. Even as she was thinking of those words as a firm statement, he will make her thoughts as false and separate from her.

ak karumAmugilaik kaNdIrE – his divine form, which is beautiful like a dark cloud, is such that he could not be given up, even as she thinks “He has falsified my thoughts”

Now, it is the pAsuram of the respondents.

aruththith thArA gaNangaLAl Arap perugu vAnam pOl – like the sky which is full of constellation of stars and planets which are desired by those who desire the benefits which they like.

viruththam peridhAy varuvAnai – just as periyAzhwAr had said in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 3-1-1 “thannEr Ayiram piLLaigaL” (thousand friends who have eminence similar to his) when he comes with his friends, it would appear like a sky with effulgent constellation of stars. The word viruththam is a modification of virundham which indicates a crowd, in the samaskrutha word brundham. Thus, it refers to kaNNan coming with a huge group of his friends. If the text in the pAsuram were Arap parugu vAnam pOl [aruththiththu ArA kaNangaLAl Arap parugum vAnam pOl] the meaning will be – like the sky which is seen by assemblies of men, who have lot of desire. Did not vAlmIki too say in SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 3-30 “garmAbhithapthA: parjanyam hlAdhayanthamiva prajA: l na thatharpa samAyanthAm paSyamAnO narAdhipa: ll” (just like people, tormented by the hot summer months, look at clouds which give them happiness, without satisfaction, dhaSaratha, looking at SrI rAma coming opposite him, was not satisfied) that dhaSaratha, seeing SrI rAma coming, kept looking at him unsatiated, like people looking at clouds during summer?

virundhAvanaththE kaNdOmE – when looking at kaNNan coming along with his thousand friends in thiruvAyppAdi, it would appear to be superficial, like looking at a huge orchard fully. Unlike that, since he comes in SrI brindhAvanam, exclusively for girls, we got to see him to the full satisfaction of our eyes.

Next, we will consider the 8th pAsuram of this decad.
