avathArikai (Introduction) – the clouds poured rain such that flowers like kArkkOdal etc blossomed, peacocks danced and all he entities which could be seen, started tormenting ANdAL. The clouds started pouring rain further. Seeing that, she started reciting this song. thirumalai nambi, one of our preceptors and also one among the five AchAryas of rAmAnujar, would get deeply involved with this as well as the next pAsuram. As a consequence, all our preceptors would get deeply involved with these two pAsurams. Meditating on these two pAsurams, thirumalai nambi would shed tears from his eyes and would not be able to utter even one word.

Oh, cloud! Just as applying mud on the outside while melting and pouring out the wax from inside, emperumAn, who is residing mercifully in the distinguished hills at thiruvEngadam, is embracing me, while melting and destroying my life inside. Are you capable of raining such that you could make me to be close to him, who would be inside my heart, giving dharSan, even as I am embracing him?
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
mazhaiyE mazhaiyE! – the word mazhai refers to cloud. The word is being repeated since the cloud is at a height and her calling out to it has to be heard.
manpuRam pUsi uLLAy ninRa mezhugu URRinARpOl URRum – while making a model for casting a vigraham (idol), people engaged in making it will make a model with wax, then apply wet mud. They will then heat it such that wax present inside will get melted. This wax will be pushed out to get the idol. Cloud was pouring rain like this. emperumAn embracing me was similar to applying wet mud on the outside. Later, melting my life inside and pouring it out was similar to heating the wax to melt it and to push it out.
nal vEngadaththul ninRa – standing in beneficial thiruvEngadam such that people could approach him easily.
azhagap pirAnAr thammai – one who has beauty as an implement in order to torment me like this.
en nenjaththu agappadath thazhuva ninRu – unlike the present situation in which when he is inside and I stretch out my hand, he is not felt and I feel saddened, he should manifest himself inside my heart, he should come out to enable me to embrace him. This will be similar to chaining both ushai, the daughter of bANAsura and anirudhdha, the grandson of kaNNan, in the same prison cell.
ennaith thadhaiththukkoNdu URRavum vallaiyE – will you not pour out your rain such that I get close to him?
This pouring would be very much required when I am united with him. She is praying to the cloud not to torment her when she is separated from him, but to pour the rain after uniting her with him.
Next, we will consider the 9th pAsuram of this decad.
