Simple Translation
Oh one who lay on a tender banyan leaf after protecting all the worlds, during the time of deluge, by keeping them in your stomach! Oh one who handed over the kingdom to sugrIva, the younger brother of vAli, after killing vAli! Oh my bluish gemstone, who has mercifully taken residence in thirukkaNNapuram where wind brings the gemstones (from the ocean) to its shore! Oh one who is the controller of the dhivyadhESam thiruvAli! Oh one who is the king of ayOdhdhi! My lullaby to you.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
Alin ilaip pAlaganAy anRu ulagam uNdavanE – when pralayam (deluge) occurred, you had swallowed all the seven worlds in your divine stomach and protected them, lying on a tender banyan leaf. Even after that, just as it has been mentioned in periya thirumozhi 11-5-3 “EzhulagamuNdum idam udaiththu” (even after eating the seven worlds, there was space inside (the stomach)), all the worlds were contained in a small portion inside his stomach. It could be said that the expansiveness of the protector was so huge that the area occupied by the protected was insignificant. Oh one who has the ability to carry out agadithaghatanA (carry out impossible) tasks!
vAliyaik konRu arasu iLaiya vAnaraththukku aLiththavanE – vAli had tied down, to his tail, without taking support from anyone, the demon rAvaNa, who you had defeated. Since he had not protected his younger brother, sugrIva, even after he had surrendered to vAli, you killed vAli and handed over his kingdom to sugrIva, who surrendered to you!
kAlin maNi karai alaikkum kaNapuraththu en karumaNiyE – this could be construed as: thirukkaNNapuram where wind will bring all the gemstones from nearby ocean and strew them on the shore. Here, the term kAl refers to wind. Alternatively, kAl could be considered as canal, the backwater from ocean, from within which the gemstones will be strewn across the shore. Such thirukkaNNapuram!
Ali nagarkku adhipadhiyE – Oh the head of thiruvAli! In the vyAkyANam, periyavAchchAn piLLai, very delightfully says that he took the support of Ali after killing vAli!
We will next take up the 8th pAsuram of this decad.
