Simple translation
Oh one who is mercifully residing in thiruveLLaRai which is having creeper gardens where atop the well grown tall aSOka tree, as the beetles climb on the reddish flowers and roam around there, the cuckoos with sweet voice are climbing the mango trees, standing there, making sweet, incoherent sounds! Oh one who is greater than all, who went to the great assembly of mahAbali’s fire sacrifice, begged for all of the vast earth and due to his honesty, accepted and brought the earth under his control! Kindly grant your mercy for me who is set out to surrender unto you.
Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
Angu mAvali … – Oh one who is greater than all, who went in that place of mahAbali’s fire sacrifice, assumed the form of an alms-seeker and measured the entire earth! Though emperumAn could have severed his head just as he did for rAvaNa et al, he did not do that and retained the worlds, since mahAbali had magnanimity, and hence he made himself an alms-seeker and accepted the earth as if it is his [mahAbali’s] possession.
nin paNindhu ezhuvEn enakku aruL puriyE – Is my surrender not as good as indhra’s surrender?
Ongu … – As the aSOka tree which has grown tall to fill the entire sky has reddish flowers blossomed, the beetles roam around thinking “let us drink honey from these flowers”, the cuckoos thought of them to be fire, became frightened and climbed on the mango trees which were there, started crying out thinking that the beetles were caught in the fire, as if saying incoherently “they are getting killed”. Though their stay is permanent there, they will also have fear perpetually.
