Simple Translation
Oh, one who stands in thiruveLLaRai, which is beautiful, and showers your mercy! Oh, one who is the supreme entity! Oh, one who has the eminence of crossing all limits in [your] child-like activities, who broke the wheel such that its spokes fell apart and who kicked the twin trees of yamaLArjuna! After you had held the bosom of the fiend [pUthanA] and consumed her life, I do not know about the true state of anything. This is the time to go to bed. You should come such that I could carry out kAppu for you.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
kaLLam … – Even as you were sleeping, a wheel, in which a monster had pervaded, came to harm you. Even as you were crawling, two trees stood, in which monsters had pervaded, in order to harm you. Just as it has been said in periya thirumozhi 8.6.8 “kAlAl sagadam pAyndhAn” (he kicked the wheel with his divine feet) and in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 1.5.5 “Uru karaththinodum undhiya” (pushing with his divine thighs and divine hands), you had kicked them with your divine feet, divine thighs and divine shoulders such that they fell down, their forms crumbling.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that AzhwAr calls krishNa piLLai arasE since his childish activities are without any signs of withering. He says that he doesn’t know of krishNa after he had annihilated inimical entities such as Sakatan et al. In other words, since krishNa is carrying out activities which are beyond his age, AzhwAr is worried as to what will happen further. AzhwAr says “Even though I know of your abilities of aghadithaghatanA [capability to bind things which cannot be bound together], I do not know of your true nature”. Through this, it is opined that AzhwAr says “I do not know as to which is the reason for your existence – is it annihilation of enemies of your followers or is it granting the wishes of your followers?” It is to make this clear splendorously that you are standing in the most radiant thiruveLLaRai and showering your grace.
piLLai arasE – Even as you carried out these activities which were beyond the reach of human beings, oh, one who has the eminence of having no shortcoming in your childishness!
nI pEyaip pidiththu mulai uNda pinnai – after you had caught hold of the fiend, thinking her to be your mother, and consumed her bosom [milk]…
uLLa ARu onRum aRiyEn – I do not know of anything which is happening. In other words, I am frightened, thinking, if you indulge in similar activities “One day or the other, danger would certainly come”.
oLi udai … – Oh, one who is standing in thiruveLLaRai which has the beauty of mansions and fortified walls and showering your mercy!
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that krishNa is the most eminent of all entities, standing in thiruveLLaRai and showering his mercy.
paLLi koL pOdhu idhuvAgum – this is the time for you to go to sleep. Apart from being the time of dusk, time is passing quickly.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that paLLi koLdhal [going to sleep] is to keep aside his responsibility in leelArasam [the flavour of playing with samsAris].
The pAsuram has to be read as pEyaip pidiththu uNda piLLai arasE! oLi udai veLLaRai ninRAy, kaLLach chagadum marudhum kalakku azhiya udhai seyda pinnai, unnai uLLavARu onRum aRiyEn to get the sequential meaning.
paramanE kAppida vArAy – Oh, one who is without anyone above you in terms of beauty etc! You should come such that I could carry out kAppu for you so that there is no danger for you.
We shall next consider the 8th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
