avathArikai (Introduction)

AzhwAr says in this pAsuram that just like rivers which run expansively all over the place, finally reach an ocean, his mind, which is a river, engages with the ocean of emperumAn’s auspicious qualities.

avai pOl – like those rivers

Simple Translation

Rivers which flow expansively through various places with abundance of water, will not rest until they reach an ocean. Oh one who is shining radiantly like a dark cloud! Oh one who has mercifully taken residence in thiruviththuvakkOdu! Oh one who is the controller of virtuous deeds [done by everyone]! Just like those rivers, my mind too will not immerse in anything other than the ocean of your auspicious qualities which shine radiantly, after entering my mind.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

thokku ilangu ARellAm parandhu Odi – rain water, gathered from heavy rains falling over various places, run expansively in various places.

thodu kadalE pukkanRip puRam niRka mAttAdha maRRavai pOl – other than reaching deep ocean, they will not stop elsewhere. Just as it has been said in SrI rAmAyaNam bAla kANdam SlOkam 1-16 “sarvadhA’bhigatha: sadhbhi: samudhra iva sindhubhi: ” (Just like rivers attain an ocean, eminent people attained SrI rAmapirAn), similar to rivers uniting with ocean, eminent people also united with SrI rAma. There was no completeness for SrI rAma because those eminent people attained him, neither was there any deficiency for him if they did not attain him. In a similar vein, the ocean did not become full because the rivers reached it, neither would it become deficient if they did not reach it. Don’t the rivers attain the ocean since they do not stop anywhere else!

Through the second half of the pAsuram, AzhwAr says that he too attains emperumAn since he cannot sustain himself anywhere else.

mikkilangu mugil niRaththAy – Oh one who has the complexion of a radiant dark cloud!

viththuvakkOttammA – the divine abode of thiruviththuvakkOdu is in itself the mountain where that dark cloud has settled.

un pukkilangu sIr allAl pukkilan kAN – I will only experience your auspicious qualities which will shine brighter and brighter as they are experienced; I will not engage with the qualities of others which are worthless.

What is the reason for this?

puNNiyanE – As per etymology, emperumAn is called as puNyanpumAmsam nayathi ithi puNya: (emperumAn is called as puNyan because he carries the jIvAthmA with him). Since the first virtuous deed is emperumAn himself with emperumAn carrying AzhwAr towards him, the opinion here is that AzhwAr will engage only with the auspicious qualities of emperumAn and not with anyone else’s qualities.

We will next consider the 9th pAsuram of this decad.
