avathArikai (Introduction)

When the women told yaSOdhAp pirAtti “Call out for your son to come to you”, yaSOdhAp pirAtti praised krishNa and asked him to come to her. When krishNa ran into the house with affection, she took him in her arms. This pAsuram describes that.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that since yaSOdhAp pirAtti was told to call her son, she said “Come here”

Oh, one who has the complexion of clouds! Come here. Oh, one who is reclining in SrI rangam temple! Come here. Oh, thirunArAyaNa, who is reclining in thiruppErnagar, which is surrounded by clear waters with waves! Come here. When krishNa ran into the house, saying that he has already eaten, yaSOdhAp pirAtti went towards him and held him in her arms. What an amazing activity has krishNa done!

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

koNdal …– Oh, one who has the form which is like a monsoon cloud, full with water! You should come here, from there, to have your food. The meaning of the term pOdharAy is “come”.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti is telling krishNa “Oh, one who has a divine form which is like a monsoon cloud, filled with water!”

kOyil piLLAy ingE pOdharAyE – Just as it has been mentioned in amalanAdhipirAn 10 “koNdal vaNNankOvalanAy veNNey uNda vAyan” (One who has the complexion of a dark cloud, and a divine mouth with which he has eaten butter, as a herd-person; this pAsuram was sung on periya perumAL, reclining in SrI rangam), oh, one who is reclining in SrIrangam temple! You should come here.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti is telling krishNa “Oh, one who is the complete controller, who does not have anyone to control you! Come here”. Instead of considering this way, it is more apt to consider that she is recalling the perumAL who is reclining in SrI rangam [in our sampradhAyam, the term kOyil refers to SrI rangam] and is praising krishNa as the one who is reclining in SrI rangam. He further refers to thiruviruththam pAsuram 33aravaNaiyIrsengOl nadAvudhir” (Oh, one who is reclining on AdhiSEshan as the mattress! You should rule from here with your sceptre) and says that when reference is taken to emperumAn’s sceptre, his supremacy is clearly manifested in SrI rangam.

theNdirai … – Oh, SrIman nArAyaNa, who is reclining in thiruppEr which is surrounded by rivers which have clear water, with waves! You should come here to have food.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai adds here that referring to krishNa as SrIman nArAyaNa brings out the first sentence of dhvaya mahAmanthram [second among the three esoteric manthrams in our sampradhAyam].

uNdu … – When yaSOdhAp pirAtti called out to him like this, krishNa came near her and said “See, I have consumed my food”. He ran inside the house. She too, feeling affectionate, looking at him coming towards her and the smile on his face, went towards him and took him in her arms. AzhwAr feels joyous saying “What all does kaNNapirAn do!” [When people complained to yaSOdhAp pirAtti about krishNa’s mischievous activities, asking her to control him, krishNa had made her to forget all those and to take him in her arms. AzhwAr is amazed with the turn of events]. An alternative explanation – The term “Aychchi thAnum kaNdu edhirE senRu eduththuk koLLa” could be construed as yaSOdhAp pirAtti referring to herself in the third person [talking about herself], asking krishNa to come and have food. After coming near her, instead of saying “I will have food” or “I do not want food”, krishNa said “I have eaten food” and ran inside the house. Feeling amazed with the way that he told her and the way that he ran into the house, yaSOdhAp pirAtti, who is his mother, forgot about his mischievous activities and took him in her arms. Thinking about all these, yaSOdhAp pirAtti appreciates his actions within herself, thinking “How one learns all these! How did he learn these, at his age!” When this explanation is considered, both the first part of the pAsuram and the second part could be considered as having been spoken by yaSOdhAp pirAtti herself [instead of considering the first part as having been spoken by yaSOdhAp pirAtti and the second part by someone else [AzhwAr].

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that when krishNa came inside the house, saying “I have eaten food”, yaSOdhAp pirAtti, who had called out to him to come for having food, forgot about his food, seeing the delight on his face and felt joyous herself. AzhwAr celebrates the tactics employed by krishNa in making her change her stance, exclaiming “What a way in which he has convinced her!”

We shall next consider the 5th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
