pravESam

In the earlier thirumozhis (divine verses) yaSOdhAp pirAtti had given krishNa a divine bath and combed his divine locks. She then decided to decorate his divine locks with flowers. She brought flowers, which were unlike one another [in terms of colour and fragrance] and called him to come near, before the flowers withered, so that she could bedeck him with the flowers. She then thought that people will cast evil eyes since his divine locks, with the flowers, looked beautiful. She then calls out to him many times, saying “This is the time of dusk. Celestial entities have come to worship you. During this time, angry deities too will be roaming around. Do not stand at places such as intersections of four streets. You should come such that I could carry out andhikkAppu [protecting, by warding off of evil spirits during dusk]” Desirous of enjoying the manner in which yaSOdhAp pirAtti had enjoyed, meditating on emperumAn who is residing mercifully in the divine abode of thiruveLLaRai, periyAzhwAr, taking over her pathos of affection and caring towards krishNa, enjoys the flavour of her enjoyment, using her words, while carrying out andhikkAppu for him, in this thirumozhi.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that just as it has been mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 4.3.2pUsum sANdhu” (the sandalwood paste appropriate to be applied …), AzhwAr, after decorating him with flowers etc, starts carrying out andhikkAppu as an antidote to casting of evil eyes.
