Simple Translation
Oh, one who is complete in all aspects, with the beautiful, shining form of a calf given birth to by a cloud, having unmatched eye brows, dark divine locks, beautiful forehead etc! Do not indulge in mischiefs towards young herd-girls who are standing by the street. You should mercifully come such that I joyously bedeck you with beautiful garlands strung together with fragrant marjoram and fragrant shrub.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
theruvin kaN ninRu – After yaSOdhAp pirAtti had told krishNa [as in the previous pAsuram] that he was doing mischief with herd-women by climbing atop houses, he asks her “Did I climb the middle and top storeys? Did I not stand in the street? When I am like that, why are you saying like these?” yaSOdhAp pirAtti tells him back “Are you not indulging in mischiefs there?” Standing in the street …
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that when krishNa asked her as to what mischief he had done when he was quietly standing in the street, yaSOdhAp pirAtti tells him that he had carried out such mischiefs earlier with these girls in the streets. She tells him not to indulge in such mischiefs henceforth. Since his mischiefs could not be counted out [being innumerable], she tells him through a single word, thImai.
iLa AychchimArgaLaith thImai seyyAdhE – Do not indulge in mischiefs with the young herd-girls, who are standing there. His activities of kicking the sand-houses built by these young girls in the streets, his grabbing their implements which they carry for playing among themselves, his pushing them after playing with them by locking hands etc are well known. Since his mischiefs are beyond words, AzhwAr says here through a single word thImai (mischief)
maruvum thamanagamum sIr mAlai maNam kamazhginRa – garlands which have been strung together with marjoram and fragrant shrub are remaining, with fragrance being emitted from them continuously. The meaning implied here is that the fragrance, which should go to his divine locks from these fragrant flowers, is remaining on the flowers, without getting wasted.
puruvam … – you have unmatched eye-brows; dark, divine locks and divine forehead which is splendorous between these two. Oh, one who is complete in all aspects, shining like a resplendent calf, due to the beauty of these limbs, given birth to by a cloud!
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, for the term uruvam azhagiya nambI – Oh, one who is complete with your decoration, beauty of limbs and the qualities of indulging in mischiefs!
ugandhu … – You should come such that I would feel happy that “I have been able to bedeck you” with these fragrant garlands
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here for the term ugandhu – it is my happiness that you would be happy with these fragrant flowers on your divine locks. The term ivai [these] includes the flowers mentioned earlier too such as champaka, trumpet flower etc.
Through this [indulging in mischiefs with those who are playing on the streets], AzhwAr is asking krishNa “What do you have to do with those who are independent of your sankalpam (will), who are following other means to reach you [than reaching through you], who desire other benefits [than you] and who wish to play among themselves [instead of being your paly-mate?] Shouldn’t you play only with those who are desirous of playing with you?”
We shall next consider the 5th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
