avathArikai (Introduction)
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that AzhwAr, even as he was envisioning vAmanAvathAram [emperumAn’s incarnation as vAmana, the dwarf], recalls thrivikramAvathAram [his incarnation as thrivikrama].

Word-by-Word Meanings
chaththiram – umbrella
Endhi – holding it
thani – without any support
oru – as unique
mANi Ay – as a bachelor (going to the vicinity of mahAbali’s ritual arena)
uththara vEdhiyil – in the northern side where the sacred fire is lit
ninRa – one, who stood
oruvanai – mahAbali, who is without any match, among magnanimous people
kaththirivar – kshathriyas (people in the class of warriors)
kANa – to see
kANi muRRum – all the worlds such as earth etc-
koNda – one who accepted, after receiving water [symbolically]
paththiram – auspicious
AgAran – [thamizh version of samskrutha word, AkAram] one, who has form, will embrace my back
pAr aLandhAn – one, who measured this earth (which he sought as alms earlier), with his divine feet, will embrace me
Simple Translation
vAmana went, holding an umbrella, to the arena where the rituals were being held, without anyone to accompany him. mahAbali, who has no match among those who are magnanimous, was standing near the sacred fire, on the northern side. One, who took the land from mahAbali, with all the kings looking on, and has an auspicious form, will embrace my back. One, who measured the worlds, will embrace my back.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
chaththiram … – being without any support, holding an umbrella along with wearing deer skin, sacred thread and girdle made of divine grass on the divine waist, going in the guise of a unique vAmana with humility and beautiful form, to the arena where the rituals were being conducted. With the kings of the world looking, vAmana took water, as a symbol of accepting three steps of land from mahAbali. That vAmana, who has an auspicious form, will embrace my back. One, who measured all the worlds, will come and embrace my back.
uththara vEdhi … – mahAbali, who was without a match in his quality of magnanimity, was standing on the northern side of the arena where sacred fires were lit.
kaththiriyar …– as the kings of the earth [who had assembled at that place] were looking on, vAmana claimed the worlds, which mahAbali was thinking were his, by taking them as alms, after accepting water as a symbol of that.
paththirAkAran – one, who has an auspicious form. This implies that he had a distinguished form. thiruvAimozhi 1-8-6 says “pulan koL mANAy” (one who had the form of a brahmachAri (bachelor) that was stealing our senses).
pAr aLandhAn – one, who had measured this earth which he had taken as alms, with his divine feet, will embrace my back.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that even as vAmana was taking water poured on to his hands by mahAbali, AzhwAr became happy since he knew what was running in emperumAn’s divine mind and said that pAr aLandhAn (one who measured the worlds). That happiness in AzhwAr’s mind was the watering required for vAmana to grow into the form of thrivikrama. indhra felt happy that he had got back his worlds. mahAbali felt happy since he was able to give what vAmana wanted, retaining his quality of magnanimity.
We shall next consider the 7th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
