Simple Translation

Oh the one with beautiful locks! I became such a great sinner that I could not  enjoy any of your activities as a child such as – looking constantly at dolls hanging from the top of the cradle, with your divine, lotus like and sharp eyes which have been applied with black pigment; lying like an elephant calf, folding your outer black coloured feet and the  little inner feet with reddish soles; folding all your little toes such that they are held within the palm; looking like a little cloud which has drunk water up to its neck.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

vadikkoL anjanam ezhudhu semmalarkkaN – divine, reddish lotus-like eyes which are sharp and which have been applied with decorating black coloured pigment. vadi – sharpness. Alternatively, we could construe this verse to mean divine eyes which have been applied with black coloured pigment so that they do not cause any burning sensation. semmalarkkaN – reddish lotus-like eyes.

maruvi mEl inidhu onRinai nOkki – when keeping infants in a cradle, its mother would tie a few dolls so that the infant would keep looking at it sweetly, with a smile on its face. AzhwAr is referring to this as maruvi mEl inidhu onRinai nOkki.

mudakkich chEvadi malarch chiRu karundhAL – the pAsuram now elaborates on the beauty of the infant kaNNan. Folding the leg where the inner part (sole) is reddish in colour and the outer, black in colour.

poliyum nIr mugil kuzhaviyE pOla – just like a baby cloud (small cloud) which has imbibed water fully.

adakki Arach chenjiRu viral anaiththum angaiyOdu aNaiththu – clasping the beautiful toes, which are together, inside the beautiful palm

Anaiyil kidandha kidakkai kaNdidap peRRilEn andhO – dhEvaki expresses her sorrow of not enjoying the way he was lying in the cradle, just like an elephant which stretches its limbs and lies with total independence, without any control.

kEsavA keduvEn keduvEnE – since the term kEsavan refers to the beauty of the divine locks, it implies that she had not enjoyed the beauty of the divine locks which kaNNan had, as a child. Since she says keduvEn keduvEnE, repeating the term keduvEn, she says that she had lost twice, first time before kaNNan was born by losing out on the enjoyment of earlier born children at the time of their birth itself [since kamsan killed them as soon as they were born] and second time, after kaNNan was born, by sending him off to AyppAdi (SrI gOkulam) soon after he was born. She says that on both occasions, she had lost out [on not having enjoyed the childhood activities of her children] due to the heinous sins committed by her.

We will next take up the 3rd pAsuram of this decad.
