avathArikai (Introduction) – she says that if she were to see him, who has neglected her, “I’ll uproot my useless bosoms and throw them on his chest, getting rid of my sorrow”.

Word-by-Word Meanings

uLLE urugi naivEnai – regarding me, who is melting inside [my heart] and languishing
uLaLO ilalO ennAdha – not enquiring whether I am alive or dead
koLLai koLLi – one who has stolen all my possessions
kuRumbanai – one who carries out mischiefs (towards girls)
gOvarththananai – kaNNa pirAn
kaNdakkAl – if I were to see him (by chance)

Simple Translation

kaNNa pirAn is not bothered about whether I, who am melting inside and languishing, am alive or dead. He has stolen all my possessions and carries out mischiefs towards girls. If I were to see him. by chance, I will uproot this useless bosom and throw it against his chest, thus ridding myself of my sorrow.

vyAkyAnam (Commengary)

uLLE urugi naivEnai – just as it has been said in thirumalai 34 “uLLuvAruLLiRRellAm udanirundhu aRidhiyenRE” (you know the thoughts of those who are thinking, by being together with them, since you the sarvAntharyAmi (indwelling soul of everything and everyone), I cannot say that he is neglecting me by not knowing that I am melting inside and languishing.

naivEnai – when asked whether you cannot say that “I am languishing in this manner”, the response is – when rivers and ponds get filled up, the excess water alone overflows; when I am languishing inside, through my words and deeds, you could comprehend to an extent my extent of languishing, but there is no way that I could fully speak about the extent of my languishing.

uLalO ilaLO ennAdha – though his affection towards me has vanished, will even compassion towards a girl vanish? He has not even asked, on account of compassion, whether “She is alive or dead”.

koLLai koLLi – Did he merely stop enquiring about me, without any compassion? Has he not stolen every one of my possessions? Is this correct?

kuRumbanai – How did SrI nandhagOpar give birth to a boy who will carry out mischiefs in his SrI gOkulam and wander around everywhere!

gOvarththananai – he will nurture cows such that they multiply manifold. However, he will put down the girls such that they cannot live.

kaNdakkAl – it is difficult to see him since he keeps running behind cows. If one were to see him, after striving a lot…

koLLum payan onRillAdha – since he has gone after the cows, neglecting us, there is no benefit to be attained through these bosoms which exist solely for him.

kongai thannai kizhangOdum – Here, the kizhangu (root) for the bosom is her AthmA (soul) alone. In svApadhESam (distinguished meaning), bosom represents bhakthi (devotion) which is enjoyable for the supreme being. It is pertinent to note that the repository for that bhakthi is AthmA. Don’t wise people say “For this body, which has several limbs, the sustaining force is AthmA. That is permanent, indestructible”? bhagavadh gIthA 2-24 says “achchEdhyOýam adhAhyOýam aklEdhyO’SOshya Evacha l nithyas sarvagatha: sthANurachalOýam sanAthana: ll” (AthmA, which permeates all through the body, cannot be severed; it cannot be burnt; it cannot be wet; it cannot be dried. Hence, AthmA is permanent, firm, immovable and existing since time immemorial). Thus, she is trying to uproot that AthmA, which cannot be caught hold of by hand, along with her bosom. This is the extent to which her pang of separation is.

avan mArvil eRindhu – with the opinion that he should suffer the way that she has suffered all along, with her bosom, she says that even while throwing the bosom she is not saying that she will throw it on the floor, but is saying that she will throw it on his chest.

en azhalai thIrvEnE – only if he were to come and hug, could one become ecstatic. She says that she will get the benefit of ridding herself of her sorrow by throwing the bosom alone on his chest.
