emperumAn asks “Is there any shortcoming in getting your desires fulfilled by me who assumes the form with the complexion desired by chEthanas (AthmAs)? Why don’t you identify your desire?” AzhwAr says “Though you assumed the forms desired by different people and manifested those forms to them, you should bring your distinguished form which is accepted by your desire and show me saying ‘See this’ “.

Simple translation

Oh one who is mercifully present in thiruvindhaLUr dhivyadhESam! If we start thinking about your highness’ physical beauty, first, the physical beauty in krutha yugam, will be milk’s complexion, that is white; physical beauty in the subsequent thrEthA yugam will have the reddish complexion of gold; subsequently the physical beauty in dhvApara yugam), will have the complexion of a dark-blue gem; at all times, the physical beauty which is remaining firm will be cloud’s complexion. You mercifully show the divine form which is remaining together with the four complexions, to make me understand which complexion the body has.

Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

munnai vaNNam … – Since, the people in krutha yugam have more sathva guNam, considering that they will enjoy white colour, he assumed a divine body with white complexion, thinking that as we do what pleases them, they will remain thinking “He did what is desirable for us; let us also show love towards him”.

Similarly, in the next [thrEthA] yugam, since the people were having more rajO guNam, subsequently, he assumed reddish complexion for them; subsequently, he assumed the form of a dark blue gem stone;

vaNNam enNNungAl – If we start analysing his divine form, his eternal, distinguished form, appeared like a fully loaded dark cloud. Instead of just hearing about this in SAsthram saying “In every yugam, he would assume the form which is desirable for chEthanas of that time, his distinguished form will be like a dark cloud”; you should show your form mercifully saying “This is how the form which you heard in SAsthram is”.

indhaLUrIrE – When I ask “Are there no SAsthram for the forms which you accept?” [Yes there are] Are you not standing in thiruvindhaLUr to prove “These cannot just be heard in SAsthram for my devotees; I should show them saying ‘See, this is my form'”?

In the next article we will enjoy the next pAsuram.
