Simple translation (based on vAdhi kEsari azhagiya maNavALa jIyar‘s 12000 padi)

My daughter says “he is the head of nithyasUris”; she says “Oh one who performed the super-human task to protect the cows by lifting the hill!” She remains with teary eyes like those who are immersed in devotion; she  performs anjali like a surrendered person; she breathes hot to burn the soul which cannot be burnt; she says “Oh one who is having dark-coloured form which caused anguish!” She rises up to see [him] and remains without blinking; she says “How will I see?” Oh one who is residing in kOyil (SrIrangam) which is surrounded by the beautiful, vast water body! What shall I do to my daughter who is comparable to lakshmi? Can I control her love which causes the suffering? Or can I make you who are not arriving, to arrive? Implies that both are impossible.

Highlights from nampiLLai‘s vyAkyAnam as documented by vadakkuth thiruvIdhip piLLai

  • kozhundhu vAnavaragatku ennum – She says “Oh one who is the head of nithyasUris!”. Alternative explanation – She says “nithyasUris are the root and he is the shoot” (i.e. sustaining himself by them).
  • kunREndhi – Do we have to search for his activities in other worlds? Did he not help the cows and the cowherd men who are like cows? She says “Am I losing him due to his lack of supremacy or simplicity?”
  • azhum – Can you who lifted the hill to stop the rain, not stop this rain [of tears]? Can you not stop these tears, as explained as in sthOthra rathnam 49bahudhA santhatha dhu:khavarshiNi” (pouring down sorrows continuously in many ways)?
  • azhum – she is doing what children would do; also, she is doing what friends would do.
  • thozhum – she is doing what is done by those who have no other refuge; also, she is doing what is done by those who have knowledge in vEdhAntha.
  • Avi anala vevvuyirkkum – As emperumAn did not arrive even after performing anjali, she thinks “my ultimate weapon also failed” and starts breathing heavily to burn the AthmA which cannot be burnt as said in SrI bhagavath gIthA 2.24adhAhya“; as said in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 117.6 “dhIrgam ushNam cha niSvasya” (she breathed hot and heavy).
  • anjana vaNNanE ennum – She is saying “You are not appearing with your cool form, just as water is poured on fire”. His form is as said in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 83.8 “mEga SyAmam” (having dark bluish complexion like cloud); did they [residents of ayOdhyA who came to see SrI rAma in the forest] not say that after going through the anguish in hearing the words of kaikEyi, only by seeing SrI rAma’s form, will they be relieved from the stress?
  • ezhundhu … – Rising up on thinking about his divine form, and starts seeing the direction from which he may arrive. She remains without blinking the eyes seeing there thinking “I should see him from the time he enters”;
  • enganE nOkkugEn ennum – As he did not arrive in the direction where she looked, she turns around thinking “he may come from behind and embrace me”.
  • ezhundhu mEl nOkki – On thinking about his divine form, she will rise even with the fatigue, and look up thinking “he will descend from the sky as he did for the elephant”; and will remain without blinking the eye thinking “I should see him from the time he enters”;
  • engagnE nOkkugEn ennum – As he did not appear still, she asks “What means can I pursue to see you?”
  • sezhum thadam punal sUzh thiruvarangaththAy – Oh one who is having this kOyil (SrIrangam) which is surrounded by beautiful, vast water body! Did you not arrive and recline in this invigorating abode looking for her? Have the roles reversed? [i.e. instead of you looking for her, she is looking for you now]
  • en seygEn – Whatever she needs to do, she has done them. Now, what shall I do? Is your dharSanam (arrival and vision) achievable through other means?
  • en thirumagatkE – Can you lose her? Doesn’t she [SrI mahAlakshmi] only have the greatness of exclusively desiring for you? Isn’t my daughter the only one who has the greatness of desiring for both of you together? She can be compared exactly with lakshmi.

In the next article we will enjoy the next pAsuram.
